Nancy L. Jones became the Vice President for University Advancement & External Relations (UA) on August 6, 2012 and has been “off and running” since then. She is responsible for all fundraising, alumni relations, sponsored programs/research and public relations/marketing. Under her leadership, Cheyney University has begun a positive brand/identity campaign which includes: positive media coverage and placement, focused on improving the look of the campus through new banners and signage, worked with her Assistant VP-Sponsored Programs to implement the Home Depot “Retool Your School” grant by upgrading landscape at historic Melrose Cottage, and upgraded new website content on a regular basis. Additionally, under her leadership, UA has organized Homecoming, begun new endowment campaigns for the new residence hall and science center, developed new relationships with corporations/foundations, restructured the scholarship process, implemented a special events unit, revised the annual fund and planned giving programs, increased the number of state, federal and private grant proposal submissions and developed plans to secure funds for Cheyney’s Centers of Excellence. She is especially proud that the Office of Alumni Relations has worked hand-in-hand with the Cheyney University National Alumni Association to complete the alumni $1 million challenge.
Ms. Jones has extensive experience as a writer and has secured high 5- and 6-figure gifts from the Cameron Foundation, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Phillip Morris-Altria, the Dominion Foundation, MeadWestvaco and the Caterpillar Foundation, just to name a few. She has also written grants to the Department of Education, the National Park Service, U.S. AID and the National Science Foundation. A scholar in the field of philosophy and history, she has served as a presenter at the American Academy of Religion-Western Region and continues her doctoral research focused on the philosophy of leadership and fundraising at America’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Ms. Jones was born and grew-up in Red Bank, New Jersey and is a graduate of Red Bank Regional High School. Following in her sister’s footsteps, she is a proud 1990 graduate of Howard University (Washington, DC) [B.F.A.]. Ms. Jones graduated summa cum laude from the New Brunswick Theological Seminary (New Brunswick, NJ) [M.Div., 2003] and graduated magna cum laude from the Claremont School of Theology (Claremont, CA) [M.A., 2008], with doctoral studies at the Claremont Graduate University. Ms. Jones brings 20 years’ of fundraising experience to Cheyney and also served as the Director of Development - Major Gifts at Dillard University (New Orleans, LA), where she worked on the University’s first comprehensive Capital Campaign which resulted in a new science building and student center following Hurricane Katrina. She most recently served as the Director of Development at Virginia State University (Petersburg, VA) where she led the Office of Development in completing its Major Gifts Campaign which resulted in raising $37 million (goal was $20 million) and hired/supervised the University’s first major gift officers and planned giving officer.
In her spare time, she enjoys singing, spending time with her many best friends, collecting books on HBCU history, football, traveling to see family and everything about New Orleans.
