The Cheyney University Alumni Spotlight shines on recent honorary degree awardee Hermione Clark Hill-Logan.
Born March 16, 1911 in Manassas, Virginia, she is the second daughter of Dr. Leslie Pinckney Hill, the renowned educator, author and first president of Cheyney State University, and Jane Ethel Clark, who was a teacher at Tuskegee Institute with Booker T. Washington. Mrs. Hill-Logan is described in her father’s poem, Melrose at Christmas, as “Hermione with the heart of gold."

The show features Cheyney University students and gives an entertaining yet insightful look at modern day black culture, shown through the eyes of two college roommates from separate walks of life.

The initial meeting of the Alumni Advisory Committee to the Campus Store was held on Tuesday June 28 at 11 AM in Marcus Foster Hall. The purpose of the meeting and the committee’s charge is to be the liaison and advisory arm linking alums from the various decades with the campus store management, planning appropriate inventory and retail items, and promoting Cheyney alumni and Greek Letter Organization paraphernalia and materials.

The Cheyney University National Alumni Association’s Past Presidents Council sponsored a successful Leadership Development Retreat on Saturday June 25 in Marcus Foster Hall. Barbara Daniel Cox planned and organized the retreat with the assistance of Greg Benjamin the Director of Alumni Relations.

For the third straight season Cheyney and Lincoln Universities will kick-off the football season against each other. This year the Battle of the Firsts – Wade Wilson Classic will be played in O’Shields-Stevenson Stadium on the campus of Cheyney University.

Shawn Murray works with his mother Gladys on the James Murray & Edwin Wilkinson Scholarship they created. The awards of $1,000 each will be given to three students to attend Cheyney University’s Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management program. Shawn Murray, coordinator of the program, is a graduate of the Plymouth Whitemarsh High School and the culinary arts program at the Central Montco Technical High School. This year’s recipients of the new scholarship will come from the 2011 class at CMTHS.

Jon Mitchell and Daryl Watson are living their dreams of playing professional football. Mitchell and Watson are both playing for the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks of the Indoor Football League (IFL). The IFL consists of 22 teams from across the country.

Shavone Dawkins (Class of 2010) encourages Cheyney University Grads to consider City Year. City year is a non-profit AmeriCorps organization that selects 17-24 year olds who come from diverse backgrounds to commit to ten months of full-time community service. City year corps members serve in schools working with students in one-on-one tutoring sessions, providing in-class academic support, and creating after-school programs to further engage the students.
