Call Me MISTER Teacher Leadership Program

Call Me Mister

The Call Me MISTER Program is a national teacher leadership program that not only prepares you for a successful career as an elementary teacher but also provides you with resources that will place you in a position to effectively impact the lives of children.

MISSION

The mission of the program is to increase the pool of available teachers from a broader, more diverse background, particularly among the lowest-performing elementary schools.  The program is open to all students who are enrolled at Cheyney University, not just males.  Due to the low number of males who choose teaching as a profession, especially African-American males, the program is critical for providing much-needed role models for young students.

VISION STATEMENT

I am a dedicated Servant Leader who is perpetuating a sorely needed concept, Servant Leaders as role models in elementary schools. I am devoted to planting seeds of dignity and respect in children, and inspiring them to cultivate those seeds that will produce a crop of unprecedented success.

I will teach reading, writing and arithmetic and progress to self-esteem, imagination and determination. Because of my immeasurable promise, not only have I earned your respect but I demand it!

A title is only important if ones' character and integrity dictate its use. So, when you address me, please verbalize my destiny, please do not call me by my first name, call me in reference to my great vision... Call Me MISTER

Cheyney University’s
Call Me MISTER Teacher Leadership Program

Cheyney University is part of a national initiative designed to encourage more African American males to dedicate their lives to becoming role-models in the field of education.  The program, named MISTER (the Mentors Instructing Students towards Effective Role Models) is backed by the State Department of Education.  Cheyney University is one of four HBCUs to join the program, which began at South Carolina's Clemson University as a strategy to recruit teachers under the direction of Dr. Roy Jones.

Call Me MISTER is a teacher leadership program that provides the participants, who are entitled "MISTER Scholars", with the tools necessary to succeed as pre-service teachers.  With the preparation and suport from the Call Me MISTER program, our students will go on to pursue successful careers in the elementary schools of Pennsylvania. The program provides packages for the MISTER Scholars to attend national, regional, and local educational conferences that will enhance their knowledge, network and skills within the field of education.

Scholars of the Call Me MISTER Teacher Leadership Program will receive a last dollar Call Me MISTER scholarship each semester of $2,000 to go towards tuition, room and board. Scholars will also receive a $100 book scholarship every semester, a stipend to cover PAPA Testing fees, PAPA Workshop Training, support for conference attendance, access to internships across the country and premier housing on campus (Humphreys Hall). Scholars in the program must be at the sophomore, junior senior or graduate level, have passed PAPA for Pennsylvania and have at least a 3.2 GPA to qualify for the items listed above. They will be required to attend various mentor/teacher leadership sessions on campus as well as designated mentoring and pre-professional development activities deemed by the Director. For every year that a scholar receives the Call Me MISTER Scholarship, they are committing to one year of teaching in the state of Pennsylvania.

Institute members of the Call Me MISTER Teacher Leadership Program will receive a stipend to cover PAPA Testing fees, PAPA Workshop Training, support for conference attendance and access to internships across the country. Institute members will be encouraged to attend various mentor/teacher leadership sessions on campus as well as designated mentoring and pre-professional development activities as deemed by the Director. Institute members can be classified as freshmen, sophomores, juniors or seniors. The goal for institute members is to become scholars in the Call Me MISTER Teacher Leadership Program. The institute is designed to recruit, track and retain students who are education majors and/or participants who aspire to enter into the education industry post graduation.
