Top 2011 Scholarships For Black Students

BlackStudents.com, a popular online resource for African American high school and college students, has published their annual listing of 2011 scholarship opportunities. The scholarships vary in criteria, award amounts, and deadline dates, but are available from over 100 different companies, organizations, and foundations.

Walmart Foundation First Generation Scholarship

The Walmart Foundation and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) First-Generation Scholars Program provides need-based merit scholarships in the amount of $4,400 to first-generation students attending any of the public HBCUs in the TMCF network.  Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 GPA and be in good standing at their respective college or university.  The applicant’s extra-curricular activities will also be considered as part of the selection process.

WyzAnt Scholarship

In 300 words or less, write an essay about the most important teacher, tutor, or coach in your life. Using your email and social media contacts, reach out to friends and family to get votes for your essay. Finalists will be determined by popular vote! WyzAnt tutors will review essays in the final round and determine the winners. Scholarship awards of $3,000, $2,000, and $1,000 are available for first through third place!

Dr. Alma S. Adams's Scholarship

Applications are now being accepted for the Dr. Alma S. Adams Scholarship for Outreach and Health Communications to reduce tobacco use among what the American Legacy Foundation calls Priority Populations. Two $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to pursue undergraduate or graduate studies at an accredited institution of higher education in the United States.

Applications will be accepted from January 1, 2011 until April 30, 2011. Awardees will be notified by June 30, 2011.

American Association of University Women (AAuW)

The West Chester-Chester County PA Branch of the American Association of University Women is offering a $1,000 academic scholarship* to a deserving student attending Cheyney University, Immaculata University, or West Chester University. The scholarship will be applied toward tuition expenses for the upcoming 2011-2012 academic year. The application deadline is March 25, 2011.  All applications must be postmarked or emailed on or before this date. Thurgood Marshall College Fund Scholarships 

The Starwood Hotels Scholarship Program provides academic scholarships of $4400 to deserving students who are interested in the hospitality industry. Students must be majoring in hotel management, hospitality/tourism or marketing and have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

The Wells Fargo Scholarship provides academic scholarships of $4400 to students attending TMCF member schools with a focus on business or finance majors; although all majors are welcome to apply. This scholarship is eligible for annual renewal provided the scholars meet the GPA requirement and continue to demonstrate unmet financial need.

 The Inspiring Women’s Award provides an academic scholarship of $15,000 to an outstanding woman for the 2011-2012 academic terms. The NBA will host the award winners (and one guest per winner) at the Inspiring Women Luncheon at the end of May 2011 in New York City.

  • The Pennsylvania House of Representatives Scholarship Program
    The Pennsylvania House of Representatives’ Scholarship Program is open to all college-bound high school seniors who plan to attend a Pennsylvania college, university or career school. Two scholarships are awarded per year and can be renewed for up to four years of college. The award consists of the value of one semester of tuition at a State System of Higher Education school (approximately $2,500), but scholarship recipients may attend any Pennsylvania public or private post-secondary institution. Students may also be eligible to receive matching funds from SAGE Scholars, Inc. (Savings and Growth for Education) and the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency’s (PHEAA) PATH Program.

  • The CORE Philly Scholarship Program
    The College Opportunity Resources for Education (CORE) Scholarship is available only to high school seniors. To qualify, you must be a resident of the city of Philadelphia, along with at least one parent or legal guardian, and must be a graduate of a Philadelphia public, charter, archdiocese, or private high school. Additionally, you must be pursuing either an associate's or a bachelor's degree at one of the participating institutions of higher education.

  • HBCU STEM Fellowship Program - The Historically Black College or University (HBCU) Fellowship Program is offered to students who have graduated from a HBCU on or after January 1, 2008 and gain admission into Masters’ level programs in STEM areas of study at colleges and universities in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware or Washington, DC .
    STEM refers to the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics but does not include majors linked to direct patient care. In addition to financial support the program provides retention-related supportive services to nurture the next generation of scientists, researchers and engineers.
    Applicants accepted into the program may receive up to $77,000 for tuition, fees, academic and living expenses for two years. In addition there is no residency requirements except the applicants must be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. This Fellowship Program is administered by the Educational Advancement Alliance (EAA) and sponsored by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), a U.S. Department of Energy agency.

  • James Hughes Memorial Scholarship Fund
    This scholarship has been founded by friends and family to honor the memory of the late James
    Hughes of Philadelphia, a beloved and respected leader of his community and a founding member
    of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) Board of Governors.
    The purpose of this program is to provide recognition and financial assistance to low-income,
    disadvantaged students residing in the city of Philadelphia, who attend any of the public high
    schools or charter schools in the School District of Philadelphia and who wish to enroll in
    universities of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. The students chosen for the
    scholarship should have demonstrated their ability and desire to achieve academically despite
    adversities and should have need for funds to meet their necessary college expenses. The awards
    are “last-dollar” scholarships and not to replace other scholarships or grants.

  • Black Employee Network (BEN) Scholarship Program
    The mission of the Union Pacific Railroad Black Employee Network (BEN) is to recruit, retain and advance the careers of African-American employees within Union Pacific by promoting and facilitating both personal and professional growth, and by working with Union Pacific Senior Leadership toward an awareness of diversity issues.
    The Union Pacific Railroad Black Employee Network Jerry Morris and Summer Houston Memorial Scholarship is a $500 or $1000 award to assist African American Students in defraying the cost of higher education. Recipients are chosen on the basis of scholastic ability and leadership. Personal or family financial situations can be a factor in consideration of eligibility and in awarding the scholarship.   • Coast Guard Announces HBCU Student Scholarship
    Imagine having your college junior and senior years fully funded. Now imagine getting a salary while you complete your college degree.
    That's what the College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (CSPI) program offers college sophomores and juniors.
    CSPI provides students with valuable leadership, management, law enforcement, navigation and marine science skills and training. It also provides full payment of school tuition, fees, textbooks, salary, medical insurance, and other benefits during a student's junior and senior year of college. The CSPI program's goal is to train future officers for success and prepare them for the rigors of Officer Candidate School (OCS).
    Each student is expected to complete his/her degree and all Coast Guard training requirements within 24 months after acceptance into the program. Following successful completion of OCS, the students will be commissioned as Coast Guard officers, committed to 3 years of active duty service.

    We are proud to announce the availability of the first Shirley A. DeLibero Scholarship. The scholarship, offered by the American Public Transportation Foundation, was created in honor of Ms. DeLibero's outstanding contributions to the field of transportation and will be awarded to an African-American student dedicated to a career in public transportation.
