Liberal Studies Degree Program
Bachelor of Art Degree
Cheyney University is proud to announce a new Bachelor of Arts degree program in Liberal Studies. This 120 semester hours major in Liberal Studies program offers students the flexibility to build degree programs to their interests and affinities after completing the University’s core curriculum and liberal studies core. Students work with an adviser to combine internship experiences, experiential learning outcomes, online portfolios, and other related experiences to obtain a broad understanding of the liberal arts and to prepare for specific skills needed for desired careers. The program has a focus on the development of successful communication skills because excellent communication skills are the most desirable skills in the workforce, according to a 2008 report of the National Association of College and Employers (NACE).
Diverse Opportunities
Additionally, the Liberal Studies degree is geared for students who want to exercise more direction in their studies and customize degrees. Also, students who want to change majors might find the BA in Liberal Studies a good option because they are able to transfer in credits from other majors and institutions.
The BA in Liberal Studies degree program has been designed to accommodate both traditional and nontraditional students.
General Requirements
Because a broad general education is necessary for any university graduate, students in the Liberal Studies program will take 51 credit hours prescribed in the general education common core required for all students at the university as part of their required 120 credit hours for degree completion. Students will be advised to take prerequisite courses for their various concentrations as part of the general education core. Some of these required credit hours may be transferred in or satisfied by demonstration of prior learning.
Students in the Liberal Studies program will take 15 credit hours prescribed in the Liberal Studies core. These include an advanced speech course, a literature course, an advanced computer-based course, an economics course, and a service learning experience.
For the remaining 54 credit hours, students will work with advisers in the department of Humanities and Communication Arts as well as with one or more advisers in specific concentration(s) as necessary, choosing from major field electives in that/those concentration(s) to complete their required 120 credit hours. At least forty-eight credit hours of each student’s program of study must be three or four hundred level courses.
