Cheyney Professor Presents at International Conference

Dr. Steven Hughes, Professor/Director of Aquaculture at Cheyney University, was invited to speak on the use of aquaculture and aquaponics as educational tools in the classroom at the 11th International Conference on Recirculating Aquaculture. Held in Roanoke, VA August 19-21, 2016, the Conference included presenters from throughout North America, South America, Europe, and Asia.

Cheyney HRTM Education Pays Off – Students and Graduates Hard at Work

All of Cheyney University of Pennsylvania's recent Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management (HRTM) graduates are gainfully employed in hospitality and related businesses, proving that an HRTM degree from the nation's first HBCU (Historically Black College or University) isn't just a piece of paper. In addition, numerous current HRTM majors and minors are wrapping up exciting, paid summer internships and jobs.

Cheyney's Anitra Jackson Named Pennsylvania's Only White House HBCU Initiative 2016 All-Star

Anitra Jackson, Miss Cheyney University 2016, is the only Pennsylvania college student selected to serve as an ambassador for the White House Initiative on HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) as a 2016 HBCU All-Star Student. Jackson and 72 other students beat out hundreds of other students across the nation, Ghana, Nigeria, and the Virgin Islands for the prestigious honor.

PA Lawmakers Approve Boosts in Funding for Cheyney University Scholarships

Pennsylvania lawmakers in Harrisburg recently approved a 2.5% ($10.8 million) increase in funding for the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE). Under the 2016-17 fiscal year budget enacted this week, Cheyney University, PASSHE’s only predominantly African American college, will receive an 18.9% ($288,000) increase to its Keystone Honors Academy (KHA).

Thirty dinosaurs, sponsored by various businesses and groups, are on display in Harrisburg, PA this summer—all works of art in an outdoor sculpture exhibit entitled Dino-Mite Harrisburg. One of them, designed by Professor Marietta Dantonio Madsen, Chair of Cheyney University of Pennsylvania’s Fine Arts Department, is located along the Susquehanna River on Front Street, between Pine and Locust Streets. Cheyney students and faculty helped paint the 8' x 6' sculpture dubbed 'Gradu Saurus'.

The 25-year-old accomplished his dream last month--a B.S. degree in Hotel, Restaurant, Tourism Management (HRTM)—and now, he's on his way to a dream job--Front Office Manager of Hilton Waikolao Village Resort on Big Island, Hawaii.

Jeffrey Bell can attest to the value of taking advantage of Cheyney University’s many student programs and activities, including the Career and Graduate School Fair which is held on campus every spring. The Business Administration major from Sicklersville, NJ, a Keystone Honors Academy scholar, attended the Fair last year and met wound up getting an internship that is paying off.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney recently unveiled designs for a 12-foot statue to honor one of the city’s most influential African-Americans. Octavius Catto was a Renaissance man, dubbed “the Martin Luther King Jr. of the 19th century.” He graduated as valedictorian in 1858 from the Institute for Colored Youth, which is known today as Cheyney University.

Makkah Hayes is excited about her future. The 20-year-old just graduated summa cum laude earlier this month from Cheyney University of Pennsylvania with a BA in Psychology and a 3.97 GPA. In addition, the Keystone Honors Academy (KHA) Scholar recently found out that she will receive the Executive Board Member of the Year Award from the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS), the nation's largest leadership honor society. She's also headed to graduate school on a full scholarship.

A rare, signed copy of Poet Phyllis Wheatley’s 1773 book, Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral, owned by Cheyney alumna Dr. Marion T. Lane (‘70), will be displayed at the Museum of the American Revolution (MoAR), set to open April 19, 2017 in Philadelphia.

Cheyney University’s Hotel, Restaurant, & Tourism Management (HRTM) program will present the Hyatt High School Summer Bridge Program on its campus from July 31 to August 5, 2016. The free six-day residential program for sophomores, juniors and seniors with at least a 2.5 GPA will introduce participants to the five major sectors of the modern hospitality industry - hotels & lodging, food & beverage, travel & tourism, recreation & leisure, and meetings & events.

Senior Class Speaker Comfort Effi, a 20-year-old Biology Major with a concentration in Molecular Biology, will do a full year of research as part of a post baccalaureate program at Virginia Commonwealth University. In December, she plans to start applying for PhD programs. Her goal is to do research for the National Institutes of Health or the Centers for Disease Control.

That's because the aspiring singer took this semester off to follow her dream. She is currently a contestant on Kelly Rowland's new hit show, Chasing Destiny, which airs on Tuesday nights at 10 pm on BET.
