Cheyney University of Pennsylvania's New Science Center which opened in August 2014 is officially Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certified. The US Green Building Council gave the Nation's 1st HBCU the news this month.

Cheyney University of Pennsylvania will officially dedicate its state-of-the-art Science Center, the first new academic building constructed on its historic campus in 30 years, on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at 4 pm. University administrators and trustees will help cut the ribbon, along with PA State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) Chancellor Frank T. Brogan, elected officials including State Representative Thaddeus Kirkland, a 1991 Cheyney graduate, and other dignitaries.

Two Cheyney University biology students, Vania Louis, a senior from Trenton, NJ, and Comfort Effi, a sophomore from Harrisburg, PA, attended a 10-week research program at Pennsylvania State University Harrisburg that gave them excellent hands-on experience in the laboratory. Both plan to pursue STEM-related careers at a time when minority women, on average, reportedly do not.

CU President Michelle Howard- Vital, a contingent of Cheyney University staff, and architects Claudia Cuerto and Tim Kearney of Cuerto Kearney Architects recently toured the New Science Center. Since its groundbreaking in Spring 2011, much progress has been made on the 39,970 square-foot building.

Cheyney University has recently committed to participate in a matching scholarship program with the Albert M. Greenfield Foundation to support high school students who are participating in the Philadelphia Zoo's award-winning Zoo Champions for Restoring Endangered Wildlife (Zoo CREW) program which serves under-served youth from the Philadelphia area.

While on campus, they had an opportunity to meet Cheyney University President, Michelle Howard-Vital, Vice President of University Advancement, Nancy Jones, Chief of Staff, Sheilah Vance, and Dr. Steven Hughes. The highlight of the visit was a tour of the Aquaponics facility.

We invite you to come and explore our Aquaculture Research and Education Center (AREL) here at Cheyney University. A FREE field trip for the day will give your students a chance to see science in action. Students will encounter various species of fish and aquatic invertebrates. Research scientist will be available to speak with students and answer questions. All visits can be tailored to meet specific state standards.
