A Message From the Provost

March 23, 2011

Please note that effective Monday, March 21, 2011 the Department of Professional Studies will no longer include programs or faculty in the area of Recreation/Leisure Studies or Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management. The Department of Professional Studies will now only include programs in Business and current areas of concentration; and, the program in Fashion Merchandising and Management.

Programs in Recreation/Leisure Studies and Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management will form the new Department of Recreation and Hospitality Studies. These faculty members will report to the Dean of Education and Professional Studies and shall elect a chairperson according to the scheduled elections specified in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Dr. Brantley will continue as the chairperson for the Department of Professional Studies and may of course, be reappointed pending the outcomes of the chairperson elections just described.

Regular faculty members in both departments may, before the end of the current academic year, recommend what they collectively believe to be more appropriate names for their respective departments. Upon review by the Office of the Provost and approval of the President’s Cabinet, these new departmental names will be used in the new catalog and subsequently for all marketing purposes.

Please note that resources have been identified to support this new structure and it is expected that this structure will be most amenable to the future growth of the School of Education and Professional Studies. While explanations for this move have been provided at the most recent faculty meeting and in great detail to faculty members directly affected by this decision, a more in-depth explanation will follow at the next full meeting of the faculty in April.
