Alumni Director to be Honored at Upcoming DELCO Alumni Chapter MLK Scholarship Gala

November 26, 2013

Cheyney University Alumni Director, Gregory Benjamin, will be honored with the Spirit Award at the Cheyney University Alumni Chapter of Delaware County MLK Scholarship Gala on January 18, 2014.  Benjamin, a 1981 CU alumnus, joined Cheyney University’s Office of Institutional Advancement as Director of Alumni Relations in 2009.

For the past four years, Benjamin has chaired the Homecoming Committee which attracts thousands of alumni back to campus each year. He is active in campus life including service on the scholarship, graduation and Founder’s Day committees. In addition, Benjamin serves as a liaison to the Student Government Council and Admissions Office, May Weekend and freshman move-in events.  He also mentors students and assists as a basketball coach.  He is a Lifetime member of the Cheyney University National Alumni Association (CUNAA) and a member of the C-Club which supports the University’s athletic programs.

In his role as Alumni Director, Benjamin can be seen at activities on and off campus, attending CUNAA meetings at the organization’s on-campus office and alumni chapter meetings and fundraisers.  He estimates that there are nearly 30,000 active Cheyney University alumni today.

Benjamin is especially proud of CUNAA’s million dollar campaign in which CU alumni made school history in 2013 by raising one million dollars over three years for student scholarships.  Recently, the Alumni Association announced a new campaign to raise an addition two million dollars.
The January 2014 Delaware County event, now in its fifth year, was organized to honor the work of Martin Luther King and raise funds for scholarships for Cheyney University students.   Previous awardees include CUNAA President Junious R. Stanton in 2012, State Representative James Roebuck in 2011 and former Congressman Joseph Sestak, in 2010.   CU alum Deborah Turner is chairwoman of the event.

Tickets for the event cost $45 which includes dinner and dancing.  It will be held at The Oaks Ballroom in Glenolden, PA. All proceeds benefit the Delaware County Alumni Chapter’s scholarship fund. For more information or to order tickets, contact
