Cheyney's Tache Johnson Named a Prestigious Apple HBCU Scholar

Tache Johnson, a junior at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, is one of 35 students from around the country to be selected as a Apple HBCU Scholar for one of the top technology companies in the world. The Keystone Honors Academy Scholar will spend three months this summer interning for the tech giant at its CA headquarters, earning $20,000 and a chance of a lifetime.

Cheyney University Honda Team Qualifies for Prestigious National Championship Tournament in CA

Cheyney University's Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC) Varsity team will compete in the national championship in California this April. Their performance in the regional competition earlier this month and votes from the outside public guaranteed their spot among "The Great 48" teams from around the country. Two years ago, Cheyney's team came in 2nd in the nation in the National HCASC Championship, earning a $25,000 grant.

C-SPAN's Interactive Bus Makes Cheyney University its First Stop on National Tour

C-SPAN’s award-winning, 45-foot interactive customized bus visited Cheyney University on Mon., Feb. 13th, as part of C-SPAN’s 2017 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) tour. Cheyney, the nation's 1st HBCU, was the very first stop on the tour. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and the outside public were welcome to step on board for free to record video, search through hundreds of thousands of hours of political video, and discover how much fun learning can be, thanks to technology.

Mamadou Dia, a Cheyney University of Pennsylvania eystone Honors Academy Scholar, is working in the state House Democratic Research Office as part of a 15-week internship sponsored by Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. The junior criminal justice major is one of 11 students taking advantage of the opportunity in Harrisburg, PA at the state capitol.

Cheyney University’s Honda Campus All Star Challenge (HCASC) Varsity team came in third at the regional competition in Washington, DC Saturday but they could still make it to the April California national competition via a online voting. Cheyney University’s Honda Campus All Star Challenge (HCASC) Varsity team is in Washington, DC competing in one of seven regional competitions for a chance to go to the national stage in April. The winner and runner-up will automatically go to the national competition. This year, a new social media voting option allows one school to make it into nationals based on votes via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr. Cheyney University sophomore Meghan Sowersby, a Keystone Honors Academy Scholar, has been awarded a prestigious Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship. She and nine other students from around the nation beat out many students from all over the country to be the first-ever Frederick Douglass Fellows. As such, they will take part in a summer study abroad program designed to enhance their leadership and intercultural skills in London, England.

The union representing faculty at Pennsylvania’s public universities, including Cheyney University, has announced its intention to strike on Wednesday, October 19, if a settlement has not been reached with the State System of Higher Education. Negotiations are continuing, and a strike is not certain. Although Cheyney University remains hopeful that a fair contract can be negotiated, we want you to be informed.

Kings of Harlem will be performed on Tuesday, October 25 on Cheyney's historic campus. Written and directed by Layon Gray, Kings Of Harlem, inspired by the 1939 Harlem Rens basketball team, tells the story of seven men who overcame adversity to win more than 2,000 games while barnstorming throughout segregated parts of the country in the 1930s despite never being officially accepted professionally or socially.
