On April 26, 2013 Cheyney University of Pennsylvania will present An Evening with Alice Walker, a benefit event in support of the Keystone Honors Academy.  The event will take place on the historic Cheyney University campus and will entail a dinner reception at 5:00 PM in the Carnegie Great Room and at 7:00 PM, a lecture presented by Dr. Walker, which will take place in the Marian Anderson Music Center. Sponsorship packages are available at many levels and capacities, and all proceeds from the event will benefit students in the Keystone Honors Academy at Cheyney University.

A Pulitzer Prize winning author, Walker is an acclaimed poet, novelist, and activist.  Dr. Alice Walker won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1983 for The Color Purple, a book that was adapted into a movie in 1985 and a Broadway musical in 2005.   Walker published her first book of poetry while a senior at Sarah Lawrence College, and she has since published a number of novels, essays, collected works of poems, short stories and other works.  Walker’s work focuses on the role of women of color in history, culture and society.  The daughter of a sharecropper, Dr. Walker has overcome hardship to achieve the stature she now holds as a renowned author and scholar.  A participant in the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Walker will speak at Cheyney University during the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement.

The Keystone Honors Academy is Cheyney University’s centerpiece program, providing a unique educational experience for academically gifted students.  Annually, scholarship funds enable 150 Keystone Honors Academy students to pursue their educational and professional dreams.  Many of these students would not be able to pursue a college degree without scholarship support.  The Academy’s persistence rate is 82% and the program graduates students at a rate that is twice that of the national average for African Americans.  There are more than 500 alumni of the Keystone Honors Academy, and they are employed in the public and private sectors, spanning the fields of medicine and health, business, law, education, and public administration.

An Evening with Dr. Walker is an exceptional opportunity for members of the honors academy and extended campus community to interact with the renowned author and educator.  Dr. Walker encompasses the brilliance and standards to which the Keystone Honors Academy aspires.  It is anticipated that the evening will help create a sustaining legacy for the Keystone Honors Academy at Cheyney University.  The event is partially supported through a number of donations from foundations and private donors.
