Marian Anderson Music Center was filled with students, families and friends for the Annual Honors and Awards Convocation

Almost every seat in the Marian Anderson Music Center was full on Thursday night for the Annual Honors and Awards Convocation. At this festive event, University leaders formaly recognize the achievements of undergraduate students and their faculty. This year, nearly 400 students were joined by guests, family, friends and faculty on April 11 to watch their hard work pay off. Commendations included Dean’s List distinction, Academic Excellence, the President’s Award, the Provost’s Award, membership in the Keystone Honors Academy, membership in national honor societies, and several departmental awards.

Joining Cheyney University President Dr. Michelle Howard-Vital on stage were Interim Provost, Dr. Bernadette Carter; Dean of Faculty & Academic Schools, Dr. Donna Parker; Dean of the University Library, Dr. Lut Nero; Associate Professor and Representive of the Cheyney University Faculty Senate, Dr. Virgilette Nzingha Gaffin; and Dean of the Keystone Honors Academy, Dr. Tara Kent.  

Following President Howard-Vital's greeting, Keystone Scholar, Trayvona Kenly presented The Occasion, and music student Elizabeth Payne performed "Summertime" from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. 

Eleven students received the President's Award for Academic Excellence - Kenneth Allen, Angelitta Anderson, Ebosele Ayewoh, Patricia Bell, Nichel Bryant, Tina-Marie Cole, Jasmin Edwards, Trayvona Kenly, Kamaria Rawlings and Ryan Roberts. This award is granted to students who perform with the highest academic caliber, maintain a full course load during the semester of nomination, and maintain a grade point average of 4.0 for the preceding Spring and Fall semesters.  
 
The Provost's Award for Leadership is given to students nominated by a member of the faculty or staff who meet the academic requirements and have demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities. Ahn-yea Graham received the 2013 Provost's Award and Trayvona Kenly was recognized with the Provost's Honorable Mention Award.
   
Outstanding seniors were recognized, including Ashley Benjamin - Biology, Ayasha Lyke - Chemistry, and Stanley Banks - Researcher.  The Honda All-Star Challenge Varsity Team of Holland Culbreath, Joshua Hughes, Trayvona Kenly, and Emmanuel Tyler were also recognized as were their Coach Dr. Hazel-Spears and Advisor Dr. Tara Kent.
 
In addition, the 24 senior Keystone Academy members received honors, along with senior members of PSI CHI, ALPHA PSI OMEGA, KAPPA DELTA PI, RHO PSI LAMBDA, ALPHA NU RHO, LAMBDA PI ETA, ETA SIGMA DELTA, and PI SIGMA ALPHA Honor societies, and from PHI BETA DELTA Honor Society for International Scholars.  
 
Departmental honors were bestowed including
Excellence in Fashion Merchandising and Management to Shakia Canty, Kamia Jackson, Lindsey John-Daniel, and Te'Ana Knowles
Excellence in Fine Arts to Nasiral-din Edwards
Excellence in Communication Arts to Crystal Mann
Excellence in Music to Christian Beard, Craig Brown-Dickens, Keith Cherry, Gemar Fennell, Janina Jones, Elizabeth Payne, Tiffany Ralston, Caleb Tacuri, and Jonae Wyatt
Excellence in Hotel Restaurant Tourism & Management to Adrese Hicks and Shaun Williams
Honda Campus All-Star Challenge Varsity Team to Advisor Dr. Tara Kent and team members Holland Culbreath, Joshua Hughes, Travonya Kenly, and Emmanuel Tyler
 
In her closing remarks, Dr. Carter congratulated all of the students for their hard work and thanked the audience. "Students, don't forget to thank your parents and guardians. Remember, you didn't get where you are by yourself. Thank you all!"
