Katora Slaughter is spending Spring 2012 abroad. What makes her decision unusual is that Katora chose the Beijing Language and Culture University. She has no previous Chinese language experience and all of her classes are presented in Chinese.

The Cheyney University Alumni Chapter of Delaware County held its 3rd annual MLK JR Scholarship Gala on January 14, 2012 at the Oaks Ballroom in Glenolden. Chapter president, Rosalind Jones Johnson presented Sharon Barnett with an Appreciation Award for outstanding service to the Delaware County chapter.

The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has raised its Academic Success Rate to 78 percent according to the recently released data from the NCAA. That figure, up two percent from a year ago, showcases the PSAC as one of Division II’s 10 conferences at or above the national average of 72 percent.

The Verizon Foundation provided Cheyney University with a $10,000 grant to support the Call Me MISTER program. These funds will be used to provide four deserving students, representing a cross-section of Pennsylvania, an opportunity to pursue a degree in Education at the University.

A moving tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King JR was well attended by Cheyney University students, faculty and staff on Tuesday evening at Dudley Theatre. Actor Rahn Scott opened the evening with a powerful rendition of Dr. King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech.

In celebration of the 175th anniversary of Cheyney University Department of Library Services presents “A Tribute to Bayard Rustin.” Keynote Speaker: Margaret Chisholm, Esq., Lecturer, Yale University,will examine the legacy of the “invisible man” of the civil rights movement. Rustin was a master strategist and tactician, a key organizer of the historic 1963 MLK march on Washington, and it was Rustin who introduced Gandhi’s principals of nonviolent political action to the movement.

Cheyney University of Pennsylvania will celebrate 175 years of rich African American history at it’s Founders Day celebrations the week of February 21. Founded in 1837 as the Institute for Colored Youth, Cheyney University serves as the oldest African American institution of higher education in the United States. Recognizing its past and the students that make it’s future, Cheyney is hosting a series of events during “Founder’s Week – Celebrating the Legacy.”

The light-filled office suite is on the second floor of the Marcus Foster Student Alumni Center. As a homecoming, alumni offered a delicious meal for students and staff.

A Visiting Lecturer from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts will present a program about the new exhibition - Henry Ossawa Tanner: Modern Spirit on February 8. The program will be held at Cheyney University in Room 114, Logan Hall at 4 pm. The program has been organized by Prof. Domenic for the African American Art class. The campus community is invited to attend the lecture to learn about this African American artist’s work.

Community Day at Cheyney University is planned for Saturday April 21 from 8 am to 2 pm. Activities are scheduled in the Cope Hall Gymnasium and O’Shields-Stevenson Stadium and will be held rain or shine, with cancellation planned for only severe weather. Activities are free and open to the public.

On Thursday, March 22, 2012, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania will present an An Evening with Dr. Maya Angelou, a charitable event in support of the Keystone Honors Academy.
The event will take place on the historic Cheyney University campus and will entail a dinner reception at 5:00 PM in the Carnegie Great Room and at 7:00 PM, a lecture presented by Dr. Angelou which will take place in the Marian Anderson Auditorium.
