Ms. Parfine Mudacumura, a senior studying political science successfully completed the Harrisburg Internship Semester (THIS) during Fall 2010. She experienced an engaging semester in Harrisburg with peers from other PASSHE institutes. She filled her days as a Legislative Intern in the office of Senator Vincent Hughes. Senator Hughes is a Pennsylvania State Senator representing the 7th District of Pennsylvania which includes parts of Montgomery and Philadelphia counties. Her responsibilities included working with the Legislative Office Director to assist coordinating Senator Hughes’ schedule, accompanying Senator Hughes’ chief counsel to committee meetings and participating in case discussions regarding his constituents. She witnessed collaborative efforts by senators to introduce bills and to fashion amendments. She became a constituent liaison, responding to inquiries, and updated the constituent database.
Parfine participated in a public policy seminar one evening a week and completed a term research assignment. She also received a stipend of $6500 paid in bi-weekly installments. She received 15 credits for the semester. Housing accommodations are provided by a Harrisburg coordinator. Currently, applications from upper level students are being accepted for interns for Fall 2011. Applications are due by March 1, 2011. This program is open to all majors. Students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher are eligible. The THIS coordinator will match the academic program and career field of each student with a suitable internship in a Pennsylvania state office. Parfine’s peers from other PASSHE institutes completed internships in the office of the Attorney General, the State Department, the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, Pennsylvania Bureau of Historic Preservation, the Governor's Policy Office,the Governor’s budget Office, the Pennsylvania Department of Health, and the Legislative Office for Research Liaison.
