Braid Takes the Reins

April 10, 2012

Joan Braid has been named head Volleyball Coach at Cheyney University.

Braid has a history of turning around programs. She has done it at Bryn Mawr College and at Garnet Valley HS and countless club teams. "I'm familiar with the great history of Cheyney University,” stated Braid. “While at Bryn Mawr my team played at Cheyney a couple of years ago. I was impressed at how smoothly the match ran, the enthusiasm of the athletes, and the support the fellow students provided to the Lady Wolves.  I'm really looking forward to working with the volleyball program, and I would like to thank Cheyney University Athletic Director Ruffin Bell for giving me the opportunity.”

In 10 seasons with Bryn Mawr she won 88 matches. Her 2008, Bryn Mawr squad won was 13-11, the first time in 14 seasons that the Owls were over .500. Under her leadership the Owls had five 10+ win seasons. Last season one of players, Katie Merrill was named the Centennial Conference Player of the Year. A club coach since 1993, Braid spent four years as a head coach with the Media Boys Volleyball Club, four years as Assistant Director and head coach with the Quaker City Volleyball Club, and has been Director of the Freedom Volleyball Club since 1997. Braid also spent a combined total of thirteen seasons coaching high school at Garnet Valley and St. Maria Goretti High Schools.

In the spring of 2006, Braid received the Jack Schatz Award from the Amateur Athletic Union for contribution to the sport of volleyball. It was presented for her work as the Director of the Middle Atlantic AAU Volleyball program. Under her leadership, the District grew from 7 members in 1998 to over 1500 members in 2006 and became the fourth largest District for AAU Volleyball.

Braid is CAP II and an impact certified coach.
