CU Class of 1960 Gives Big Check

2010 President's Brunch following Commencement 2010

June 4, 2010

At the 2010 President’s brunch following the Commencement 2010 ceremonies, representatives of the Cheyney University Class of 1960 presented a check for $27,000 to President Howard-Vital to be used for scholarships. The 50-year alumni’s generosity did not end there. While the president was graciously receiving the collective check, several other alumni in attendance wrote additional checks which brought the total contribution from the Class of 1960 to approximately $29,000—a serious challenge for subsequent Classes to match.

PASSHE Chancellor Dr. John Cavanaugh and his wife, Dr. Christine Cavanaugh, joined the alumni luncheon after participating in Commencement 2010. During the commencement ceremony, Chancellor Cavanaugh reminded graduates that today they were the next generation of leaders following in the footsteps of distinguished Cheyney University alumni.

Chairman of the Cheyney University Council of Trustees Robert W. Bogle, himself a member of the Class of 1960, gave the inspiring keynote address. In his address he reminisced about his days as an undergraduate and the importance of remembering how far we have come as a people. Bogle also reiterated the of urgency of never forgetting the strengths gained through Cheyney University and of passing along to coming generations our story and our tradition of excellence.

Members of the Cheyney University Jazz Combo with Professor Allen Gardner and retired faculty, also contributed their talents to the event, and they were grateful to learn more about the history of Cheyney University and the passion of its alumni. Ms. Cheyney University 2010, Andrea Wilder, was there to offer her personal thanks to the Class of 1960 for it’s support and to ask them to stay closely involved in the lives of current students. Summarizing the sentiments of fellow graduates, Wilder stated “It means a lot!”
