On Saturday, October 19, students from Cheyney University's Hotel, Restaurant, & Tourism Management program and more than 180 students, staff, faculty and industry representatives from nearly two dozen educational institutions and hospitality companies throughout the northeastern U.S converged on Cheyney's campus for the National Society for Minorities in Hospitality (NSMH) Northeast Regional Conference. Some of the schools represented were Cornell, Boston, Drexel, Temple, Penn State, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and Delaware State.
According to Professor Ivan Turnipseed, who helped facilitate the program, "Saturday’s atmosphere was delightfully abuzz with homecoming activity, the campus looked great, and our students made us proud as they sported their University and Program-embroidered Cheyney blue dress shirts at the hotel on Friday and donned business professional attire for campus events on Saturday. The conference went off without any major hitches, and guests reported that they truly enjoyed their time on campus and appreciated getting a taste of homecoming along with their participation."
Cheyney's HRTM students had pivotal roles throughout the conference. HRTM senior Aaron Yancey serves on the NSMH national board as Public Relations Director and provided leadership during multiple events. CU students also earned accolades, including Yuhanna Muhammed, a junior Communications and HRTM double-major, who was a semi-finalist in the conference’s industry professional-evaluated “elevator speech” contest. Between conference activities, Yancey and Muhammed also appeared in the Homecoming Parade as Mr. Legend and Mr. SGCA, respectively.
Cheyney HRTM junior Kenny Owens proved to be the people’s choice as he bested a Penn State group dance and song routine to win the Saturday evening regional talent competition. Owens performed a contemporary piano medley featuring “Human Nature” by Michael Jackson and “Halo” by Beyoncé, and he will go on to represent the northeast at the 25th Annual NSMH National Conference & Career Fair next February in St. Louis, MO.
"I’d like to extend a heartfelt thanks to everyone who played a role in making the National Society for Minorities in Hospitality Northeast Regional Conference, which was held Friday to Sunday, October 18 to 20th at the Wyndham Garden Glen Mills Wilmington Hotel and Cheyney University, a resounding success," Dr. Turnipseed exclaimed.
