Cheyney University and UPS Partnership Results in $50,000 Commitment and Tour of UPS Facility for Students

Cheyney University of Pennsylvania received a $23,300 grant from The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS (NYSE:UPS), to be used toward student scholarships and  general maintenance costs related to the University’s new $40 million 400-bed residence hall.  The grant is part of a $50,000 commitment to the University and the conference room in the residence hall will be named in honor of UPS.  The UPS Conference Room will be used to host corporate and alumni meetings as well as provide additional space for students, faculty and staff on campus.


“The UPS Foundation is committed to funding impactful programs that make a meaningful difference in our communities – so we are proud to support Cheyney University’s completion of its beautiful new residence hall by providing critical scholarship support to students,” said Ken Sternad, President of The UPS Foundation.


As part of UPS’ long-term partnership with Cheyney University, students and Cheyney staff, including  Nancy L. Jones, Vice President for University Advancement and External Relations, Ms. Ruth Brice, Director of Career Services, and Rev. Elisha B. Morris, Internship Coordinator, boarded a bus and toured the Philadelphia Chesapeake District UPS facilities. The trip, organized by Mr. Tony Heath, Director of Community Affairs, was an opportunity for them to learn about career opportunities offered by the international company known for its outstanding customer service and hardworking workforce.   Cheyney University students sat down with experienced corporate professionals to hear about their careers in a variety of UPS departments from Marketing to Engineering. 


“The UPS Staff planned an outstanding experience for us. We learned about their operation and received a lot of career advice. Mr. Thomas E. White, Jr., Managing Director of Sales, has worked for UPS for over 25 years and is an alumnus of another Historically Black College and University-Fort Valley State University (Fort Valley, Georgia),” stated junior Desmond R. King.  “He encouraged us to work on our writing skills, maintain the drive not to stay in one place - but be open to move for new learning opportunities, remember how to be an excellent listener, and network at every opportunity.”


Cheyney University students were invited to serve as volunteers at next year’s National Urban League Convention coming to Philadelphia in June 2013. The following students participated in the UPS Career Day tour:  Desmond R. King, Business Administration – Marketing; Amos Williams, Business Administration – Marketing;  Wah’fe Granger, Recreation and Leisure Management; Tyrik T. Thorn – Education - Call me MISTER; Rashida Jones, Business Administration Management; and Robert Tolbert – Education – Call Me MISTER.  The students also participated in a $50,000 check presentation with Mr. Heath.


Established in 1951 and based in Atlanta, GA, The UPS Foundation identified specific areas where its backing clearly impacts social issues.  In support of this strategic approach, The UPS Foundation has identified the following focus areas for giving:  nonprofit effectiveness, encouraging diversity, community safety and environmental sustainability. In 2011, The UPS Foundation distributed more than $45.3 million worldwide through grants that benefit organizations or programs such as Cheyney University and provide support for building stronger communities.
