Cheyney, PA (July 26, 2010). Earlier this month, the Cheyney University campus community welcomed the appointment of the 2010-2011 Student Government Cooperative Association (SGCA) members. The new SGCA membership officially took office on July 1, 2010; however, this group of up and coming leaders began the transition into their new roles in May for the SGCA is the official voice of the student body on Cheyney University’s campus.  “There is a level of confidence and readiness amongst my fellow board members that I feel is both inspiring and exciting. I believe this year will be very productive for SGCA and we will be able to not only work efficiently as student leaders but also set strong precedents and new foundations for Cheyney University’s future student leaders. We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us, and now we must do our part so that once we finish our administrative term, Cheyney University’s student leaders of tomorrow can stand on our shoulders with more advantages than what was provided to us. We’re ready and eager to get back to campus and get to work so we can make that dream a reality,” said Chris Carter, SGCA President.

During the 2009-2010 academic year, the executive board members of the SGCA enlisted the services of an organizational development consulting firm to assist in the realignment of the organization. As a result, the SGCA membership for the 2010-2011 intends to continue to develop the groundwork laid by the previous board and to work towards fulfilling its mission of providing an enriching student life experience at the University. Their commitment to progress and professional development has been demonstrated in the announcement of a retreat that will serve as the vehicle to initiate the strategic planning process for the organization, to develop the goals for the academic year; as well as, build a budget that supports the strategic goals of the organization. The SGCA retreat will be held on the University’s campus in August. Members have been planning possible agenda items to include topics such as team building, conflict resolution, goal setting, and budgeting.

Strengthening the SGCA will assist the Cheyney University administration in recruiting new students, retaining existing students, and improving student and alumni involvement. A strong SGCA will lead to a better experience for the entire student body and create a healthier environment for the University.

The formal swearing in of the SGCA members will take place on August 26th during the university’s Faculty and Staff Opening Conference. Moreover, SGCA leadership will announce their initiatives for the 2010-2011 academic year to the campus community at the event.
