CUNAA presents $1,000,000 check to President Michelle Howard-Vital
Cheyney University National Alumni Association honored a pledge it made some three years ago by presenting a check for $1,000,000 to Cheyney University at a star-studded 175th Anniversary Gala Thursday evening, October 18, 2012 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.
About a thousand guests witnessed the exchange when CUNAA President Junious Stanton, accompanied by Alumni Director Greg Benjamin, who initiated the pledge, and the CUNAA Board of Directors, gave the symbolic check to Cheyney University President Dr. Michelle Howard-Vital. Gala Host Kenny Gamble led the audience in a rousing standing ovation as Vital eagerly thanked the alumni for their support over the years. The Gala celebration helped CUNAA reach its goal. All of the money will go to scholarships for Cheyney students.
Following a delicious meal, CUNAA gave Legacy Awards to alumni who've made significant contributions to Cheyney for at least 50 years. They honored Hermione Hill-Logan '39, daughter of CU's first President, Dr. Leslie Pinckney. Logan passed away just days before the Gala. Also in the spotlight for at least five decades of service: Dr. James Dumpson '33, Henrietta Stukes '48, Audrey Washington, Elizabeth Holmes '59, and James Washington '55.
Cheyney University's jazz ensemble and choir performed at the elegant affair. Following the program, guests were treated to a star-studded concert featuring BIlly Jolly and TSOP Band, Amazin' Grace, Billy Paul, and Harold Melvin's Blue Notes. Many took advantage of the smooth sounds by grabbing a partner and spinning around the dance floor. Those who were really in the celebratory spirit stayed for the After Party which featured Urban Guerrilla Orchestra.
