Carter & Hume named Athletes of the Year

April 25, 2012

For the first time in four years the athletic department honored the student athletes with a full banquet off campus. “This is something the student athletes really wanted,” commented Sports Information Director Lenn Margolis. “We actually surveyed the athletes at a meeting back in February and we were able to deliver.”

The banquet held at the Penn Oaks Country Club in West Chester provided the perfect setting as the staff and athletes put on their Sunday best. After listening to a motivational speech by Dr. Scott Glenn the packed banquet room dined on chicken, salmon, pasta, rice, vegetable and salad.

The Female Athlete of the Year was awarded to Simon Carter. Carter is believed to be the first Cheyney female to participate in the Indoor National Track Championship. She posted the sixth fastest time in Division II this past year. Football Standout Tim Hume was awarded the Male Athlete of the Year. Hume was named the PSAC Defensive Player of the Year and a finalist for the Upshaw Award (Best D II lineman).

Rookie of the Year honors went to Shanavia Thomas and Justin Watkins. Thomas is a two-sport athlete who is excelling on the track this spring. The freshman has all ready etched her name in the Cheyney record book. She owns the University record in the long jump as well as the 200 meters and has qualified for the PSAC Championships in both events. She is also a starter on the Lady Wolves basketball team. Watkins is an integral part of both the football and track team. He too will be participating in the PSAC Outdoor track and field championships at Bloomsburg next week.

The Presidential Scholar Athlete Awards are given to the top student athlete who has exhausted his/her eligibility and is graduating with the highest grade point average amongst the student athletes. The Female Presidental Scholar Athlete was awarded to volleyball player Janelle McKelvey. The Male Presidential Scholar Athlete was awarded to basketball player Brandon Baylor.
