January 6, 2012
The Wolves jumped out to a 6-0 lead thanks to three buckets by Jason Sabb. Sabb paced the Wolves (2-8:1-6) with 24 points and team mate Brandon Baylor added 17 but it wasn’t enough as Slippery Rock (7-4:4-3) prevailed 64-58.
The 6-0 lead was the biggest lead either team had until the waning seconds of the game. The contest was tied 11 times.
Baylor gave the Wolves a one point lead, 55-54 after converting a pair of free throws with 3:35 on the clock. The Rock would go on a 9-1 run over the next 3:16 to take a seven point advantage with :19 to play which the Wolves would not overcome.
The Wolves only turned the ball over six times, a season low. But struggled shooting, converting 9 of 31 attempts (30%). The Rock owned the back boards out-rebounding the Wolves 56-31. Both teams struggled shooting the ball from long range. Cheyney was 3-22 from behind the arc and Slippery Rock was 1-17. The Rock also had an edge from the charity stripe. SRU went to the line 43 times compared to 26 for Cheyney.
Cheyney will be back in action Saturday night at Mercyhurst.
