December 4, 2011
Cheyney University dominated the sprints at the Bowie Tie Classic, the season opening indoor track meet hosted by Ursinus College. Cheyney took six of the top nine spots in the 60 meters including a 1,2,3 finish by Kemuel Wright, Kalik Mitchel and Lonnell Wilson. The trio was separated by .13 seconds. CU also took home eight of the top ten spots in the 200 meters. Wright led the way with a time of 22.75, two tenths faster than his nearest competitor, teammate Wilson.
Donte McCorey placed fourth in the 400 meters in a time of 54.02. The 4 X 200 relay team of Mitchel, Wilson, Nate McCoy and Justin Watkins placed third in a time of 1.33.21. Other CU highlights included a third and fourth finish in the long jump by Daniel Shalom and Kendell Thomas with marks of 5.95 and 5.82 respectively. Thomas and McCoy placed 2,3 in triple jump with marks of 12.80 and 12.27 meters. Football player turned shot putter Joe Winn placed third with an effort of 12.91 meters.
“We are a very young team. I was happy with the freshman and sophomores today, commented coach Williams. “These guys carried themselves well today and stepped up when challenged in various meet situations. This is what I was working on for over the past two years while I was recruiting and trying to build the program.”
Wright, Mitchel and Wilson qualified for the PSAC Championships in the 60 and 200 meters. John Melvin and McCoy also qualified in the 200 and triple jump respectively.
Cheyney finished second amongst the Division I and II schools and third overall; impressive for a team that only competed in seven events. For complete results of the Bow Tie Classic click here.
