Cheyney Grad Serves on Schomburg Panel

Cheyney, PA (August 162010). Cheyney University graduate and 2010 senior class president, Diamond Butler, served on a panel alongside EMMY and GRAMMY award-winning actress, Ruby Dee, at the prestigious Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York City.
Less than three months ago, Diamond Butler graced the commencement stage to accept her diploma from Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. Upon her graduation, Diamond was selected as a Schomburg Scholar. The Schomburg is recognized as one of the leading institutions of its kind in the world, and for more than 80 years the Center has collected, preserved, and provided access to materials documenting Black life, and promoted the study and interpretation of the history and culture African Americans.
On Thursday, July 29, Diamond had the opportunity to participate as a panelist at“What’s Up @ The Schomburg? A Community Conversation,” which was held to engage the community in a discussion about the Center’s future leadership and programs. Current Center director, Howard Dodson, will retire in February 201l after 25 years of service. In addition to Ms. Dee and Ms. Butler, panelists included Aysha Schomburg, great grand-daughter of Schomburg’s founder Arturo Schomburg; Dr. Brenda Greene, professor at and director of the Center for Black Literature English at Medgar Evers College; writer, poet and journalist, Felipe Luciano; and author and journalist, Herb Boyd.
Diamond is a Junior Scholar at the Schomburg.
