Washington, D.C. – July 6, 2010 – Recent Graduate and Chair of this year’s NAACP Education Conference, Walter Lewis, met with NAACP President, Benjamin Todd Jealous earlier this month in an overall effort to garner support for the conference, which takes place at Cheyney University, August 13-15, 2010.

Jealous, who was initially targeted as a potential keynote speaker for the conference, is unable to attend due to a previous engagement, and instead agreed to film a welcome address to be shown during the opening ceremony.
Walter, who currently resides in Pittsburgh, traveled to Washington, D.C. to meet with Jealous. During their conversation Jealous emphasized the importance of fighting to sustain the legacy of the nation’s HBCUs and commended the Cheyney NAACP chapter’s efforts to bring such deliberations to the forefront in their 2010 Education Conference.

“The State of the HBCU,” is the theme of this year’s conference and it will feature renowned scholars and experts in various fields such as “Father of Afrocentricity,” Dr. Molefi Kete Asante, and poet, playwright, activist, Amiri Baraka.

The conference will consist of panel discussions and workshops, designed to provide an opportunity to engage in a dialogue and learn about some of the issues specific to African Americans and other racial and ethnic minorities, and bring to light the history, purpose, achievements and struggles of the HBCU and its relevance in today’s society.
