The Cheyney University Student NAACP Chapter was represented by Sophomore and NAACP President, Anne Frazier, 2010 CU graduate and Carnegie Mellon graduate student, Walter Lewis and the Student NAACP Advisor and Class of 2000 CU Alumnae, Felicia Seamon at the Campus Progress National Conference in Washington, DC on July 7-8, 2010.
Campus Progress is a national organization that works with and for young people to promote progressive solutions to key political and social challenges. Through programs in activism, journalism, and events, Campus Progress engages a diverse group of young people nationwide, inspires them to embrace progressive values, provides them with essential trainings, and helps them to make their voices heard -- and to push policy outcomes in a strongly progressive direction.
The program included inspiring speeches, panels, performances, and interactive discussions. We had a chance to hear from and ask questions of a tremendous roster of speakers — Van Jones, Samantha Power, John Podesta, Paul Begala, Jamal Simmons, Chris Hayes; and dynamic spoken word performers and many others. CU students connected with a remarkable group of young participants from around the country and discussed pressing social and political issues and the prospects for change.
Finally, on Thursday, words were put into action on advocacy day. CU students learned the skills needed to become an advocate on the issues that matter to young people and engage with congressional offices on Capitol Hill to press for change on those issues.
