Cheyney Participates in the Largest Collegiate Bowling Tournament in the Country

Cheyney went 3-3 on day one of the three day tournament hosted by Kutztown University and Heister Lanes in Reading with 3,978 pins. Day one featured six baker matches. The Lady Wolves squeaked out 614-609 opening match win over Hampton. The first time CU has ever beaten Hampton on the lanes. The Lady Wolves were down 49 pins going into the final baker game of the match and rallied for the victory. The Lady Wolves other two victories came over Division I Howard (760-670) and Coppin State (601-557). Cheyney fell to PSU-Altoona (639-591), Morgan State (711-607) and Long Island (830-530). The 760 pins rolled against Howard set a Cheyney record for pins in a baker match.


Day two of the Kutztown Invitational featured six traditional matches. The Lady Wolves went 0-6 falling to Florida A&M (828-758), Southern (766-732), Vanderbilt (889-731), Delaware State (972-793), Stephen F. Austin (836-799)and St. Peter’s (853-687). Cheyney was led by Danielle Mines who averaged 165 over the six games. Taylor Billington averaged 164. Janae Silver, Erica Williams and Alean Rhodes averaged 152, 136 and 133 respectively.


Sunday’s format went back to baker matches where the Lady Wolves went 1-2. Cheyney fell to Penn State Altoona 4-2 twice and defeated Coppin State 4-3. The Lady Wolves finished  4-11 and 26th overall in the largest collegiate bowling tournament in the country.


“We earned a couple of nice wins this weekend,” commented Coach Blakeney. “It was our first time competing in a while and a three day tournament took a lot out of us. We’ll be ready for our next competition in a couple of weeks at the Morgan State Invitational.”
