Cheyney Plays Inspired Volleyball in Season Opener

September 10, 2013

The Cheyney University  Lady Wolves  got the 2013 season underway in a home battle against Goldey Beacom College. The competition was a rousing evening of collegiate volleyball. Despite falling 3 sets to 2, Coach Joan Braid was pleased with the effort put forth by her squad.

Cheyney dropped the first set 25-15 but rallied to win the second 25-17 and third in dramatic fashion 27-25. However the Lightening took the fourth 25-16 and fifth set 15-11 to earn the hard fought victory.

In speaking with her team after the match, Braid made note of this being their first match of the year. Goldey Beacom has already played four matches. Revenge will be on the Lady Wolves' minds as they travel to Wilmington, DE on Saturday for a rematch with the Lightening and a match with Delaware Valley College.

"The atmosphere was great in the gym. We had a couple of hundred people cheering us on plus the band," commented Braid. I don't think either team has ever experienced an atmosphere at a college game like that."

Senior Lindsay Ashby and Freshman Breanna Joseph paced the team with 10 kills apiece. Joseph also added a team high 14 digs. Kennetha Wallace has become the setter on the squad. Last season Wallace was an outside hitter. The Nashville, TN native recorded 15 assists.

Kadi McCoy paced the Lightening with 19 kills as Goldey Beacom improved to 1-4 on the season.
