Cheyney Puts Up a Tough Fight

October 15, 2011

Cheyney University played inspiring football against West Chester University in front of a homecoming crowd of 3,689 but fell short 23-7.Marcus Jones paced the Wolves running attack with 92 yards on eight carries. It was Tim Hume and the defense that really stood out. Hume was credited with 11 tackles including 7.5 for loss and 2.5 sacks.

The teams battled through a scoreless first quarter. WCU put the games first points on the board when Rondell White ran in from one yard out. However, a rare miss by place kicker Shawn Leo left the score 6-0. The scoring drive was set up after the Wolves couldn’t capitalize on first and goal from the West Chester two yard line. Jones scampered 74 yards off left tackle to put the Wolves in striking distance. It was the longest play from scrimmage for the Wolves this season. The Wolves were ruled to have fumbled on third down and WCU capitalized picking up the ball and returning it to the Cheyney 48. White was credited with 66 yards on 17 carries. A 30 yard field goal by Leo rounded out the scoring in the first half.

Cheyney took the second half kick-off and marched 84 yards on nine plays in just over minutes to find the end-zone on a Jones rush of five yards. The big play of the drive was a 42 yard pass from Chris Anderson to Dominic Crowell to keep the drive going and give the Wolves a first and goal on the five. It was the longest pass play of the season for the Wolves.

West Chester capitalized on a pair of second half Cheyney turnovers scoring touchdowns on both drives for the final margin of victory.

The Wolves will host Shippensburg and East Stroudsburg the next two Saturdays. Kick-off both days is 1:00 pm.

NOTES: It was the first time since 1985 that the Cheyney defense held West Chester to less than 25 points.
