After a national search, Ken Lockard has been named the Head Football Coach at Cheyney University.
Last season, Lockard served as Interim Head Coach. He has been the Wolves Defensive Coordinator since 2008.
Since Lockard’s arrival, he has coached four All-PSAC players on the defensive side of the ball and eleven athletes to compete in the D2/D3 All American Bowl in Minneapolis. Brandon Buchanan was named Defensive MVP and most recently Tim Hume was named Defensive Lineman of the Game. Hume was also named Defensive MVP for the Don Hansen All-Star game in Virginia Beach, VA.
Lockard served on a number of important roles in the Department to assist in the University’s reinstatement of the NCAA rights and privileges. He was the researcher on the President’s Task Force that completed the NCAA mandated Institutional Self Study Guide; he served on the Compliance and Academic Committee and completed his first year as Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) Co-Advisor. To date, the group has raised the most money in the Department for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Lockard commented, “I am very thankful that Cheyney University President, Dr. Howard-Vital has given me this opportunity to lead these wonderful student-athletes. This is a great opportunity for me and our staff to continue the progress that has been made here over the past couple of seasons. Last season we were more competitive than we have been in awhile. We just need to continue to build upon that success. This is a very exciting time for me as a coach.
Lockard spent two seasons at Lehigh University as outside linebacker coach. Prior to that, he spent the 2005 season as the Offensive Line Coach and Run Game Coordinator at Santa Barbara City College in California.
He began his career coaching at New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, where he held a wide range of responsibilities from coaching the tight ends and tackles to assisting with recruiting and film preparation.
Lockard earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education in 2003 from Bucknell University, where he earned Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. He also studied abroad at the University of the West Indies in the spring of 2002.
Lockard resides in Boothwyn with his wife Billie Jo.
