Cheyney University Professor and Students Among Many Conducting Educational Research This Summer

Cheyney University of Pennsylvania students Chandra Gadsden and Khalid Habib are working this summer with their professor, Dr. Abeliaziz Bior, who is conducting research on Alzheimer’s disease at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, N.Y., as part of a collaborative effort.

Cheyney University President Announces Retirement

Cheyney University of Pennsylvania President Dr. Michelle R. Howard-Vital announced that she will retire on July 31, 2014, exactly seven years after she took over the reins as the 11th president of the nation’s first institution of higher learning for African Americans. Following the university’s order of succession, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Phyllis Worthy Dawkins will assume Dr. Vital’s responsibilities as acting president effective July 7, 2014.

Monroe Griffin, the new program coordinator of Cheyney University's Call Me MISTER program, is accepting applications for fall 2014. Call Me MISTER Scholars receive academic and book scholarships, stipends to cover PAPA and PECT fees and tests, support for conference attendance and access to internships across the country. In addition, they are encouraged to attend various workshops, training, mentoring, professional development and teacher leadership sessions on and off campus.

They wore beanies on their heads 50 years ago when they walked the Historic Quadrangle at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. On May 10, when they led the procession for the graduating Class of 2014 back at their alma mater, the women proudly wore white, while the men dressed in black.

Despite an afternoon that brought torrential downpours, Cheyney University's 2014 commencement went off without a hitch beginning at 11 am under the sun and the shade of a huge white tent on the school's Historic Quadrangle. As the University Band played Pomp and Circumstance, nearly 200 graduates marched forth to collect their undergraduate or graduate degrees that they worked so hard to attain.

The Keystone Honors Academy (KHA) at Cheyney University held its annual end of the year banquet on May 1. It was a red carpet affair, complete with elegantly dressed scholars who took time to pose for a host of pictures. For the 34 seniors who are moving on to jobs, law school, graduate school, medical school and other opportunities, the night was bittersweet.
