Cheyney Sophomore Samih Taylor Presents Colonization Research in Granada, Spain

This school year has been a whirlwind for Samih Taylor. The 20-year-old double major in Ecology and Marine Biology has spent much of it in Spain. “It was an amazing opportunity for me,” she exclaimed, “one of those awe inspiring and joy inducing experiences in one’s lifetime."

Cheyney's Career & Internship Fair Another Success

Cheyney University students and alumni took advantage of the annual Spring Career & Internship Fair held March 18 at the nation's 1st HBCU. Hosted by the University's Center for Career & Professional Development and Internship Coordinator Lisa Blount, the event attracted 25 employers looking for workers and interns.

Make sure to come armed with copies of your resume, dressed for success and ready to give a 30 second "elevator speech" that summarizes your strengths, experience, and why an employer should hire you.

The 2015 Cheyney Hospitality Entrepreneurship Seminar (CHES)--An Intimate Luncheon Panel Discussion--was a success. The upscale luncheon and mini business plan competition drew about 40 people March 4th at 12:30pm in The Cheyney Grille on the 2nd floor of the Harris-Turner Building. Student entrepreneur winners took home $50 to $200 in winnings for their unique ideas and business plans.

Cheyney University of Pennsylvania and more than 60 other Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) are vying for tens of thousands of dollars in the 2015 Retool Your School Campus Improvement Grant Program sponsored by The Home Depot. Cheyney needs all students, faculty, staff, alumni and supporters to increase CU's chances of winning by voting every day from now until April 20th.

Congressman James Clyburn (D-6th, South Carolina) will kick off Cheyney University's Presidential Lecture Series by speaking at the historic institution on Wednesday, April 1 at 1 pm in Marian Anderson Auditotium. A reception and book signing will follow the lecture. “We are excited to have Congressman Clyburn as the inaugural lecturer,” said said Interim President Frank Pogue, Ph. D. “The Presidential Lecture Series will feature lectures from outstanding and well-known individuals."

“A Legacy of Leadership” was the theme for Cheyney University’s 2015 Founder’s Day, a time to celebrate the 178th birthday of the nation’s 1st HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities).PA Representative Thaddeus Kirkland (’91) held nothing back while giving the keynote address. “Over the years, there have been many attempts to destroy, defame, degrade and shut down my beloved institution," he said. "But we are like the rising of the phoenix who was able to stand the tests of time."

Cheyney University senior Yuhanna Muhammed walked away from the 26th Annual National Society of Minorities in Hospitality (NSMH) Conference & Career Fair earlier this month with three paid summer internship offers and two full-time job offers upon graduation in December. The event was held on his birthday weekend earlier this month in his hometown of Pittsburgh, PA.

A 19-person delegation from the Cheyney University Hotel, Restaurant & Tourism Management (HRTM) Program is just back from the 26th Annual National Society of Minorities in Hospitality (NSMH) Conference & Career Fair. The big event was held at The Westin Convention Center in Pittsburgh, PA February 11 – 15. A number of them walked away with internship and job offers.

Cheyney University students in the Keystone Honors Academy recently visited Temple University College of Medicine. The students participated in an information seminar which provided an overview of the requirements necessary for admission into medical school, and met with a senior admissions advisor who provided answers to their questions. In addition, they spoke with current students in the pharmacy, medical and dentistry schools, and toured the North Philadelphia campus.

Cheyney University’s Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC) team recently took 2nd place at the regional games at University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), which automatically puts them in the national competition that takes place March 21-25 in Torrance, California. “Our team did what they do best: stay calm and show us what they know,” exclaimed Coach Hazel Spears.

Elisabeth Burton, Cheyney University's Manager of Housing Operations & Auxiliary Services (Dining) since 2012, got a big surprise when she recently reported to the first floor of Burleigh Hall to give a report to the President's Executive Council (PEC) about a housing issue. That's when Interim President Frank G. Pogue and the PEC presented her with The Cake Award for going above and beyond her regular duties and responsibilities.

Pennsylvania Representative Thaddeus Kirkland will give the keynote address at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania's 178th Founder's Day on Wednesday, February 25 at 1 pm. The annual event will take place in the Marian Anderson Music Center Auditorium on the historic campus. Kirkland, a 1991 graduate of Cheyney, is a community activist who first burst into the public arena in the fight for improved education for students in the City of Chester.
