In one of the most unique and elegant campus events, the 2013 Mr. and Miss Cheyney University Coronation showcased the best of Cheyney University’s traditions on Wednesday, October 16, 2013. Cheyney University students, alumni, faculty and supporters filled the Marian Anderson Music Center Auditorium to celebrate the coronation of the 41st Miss Cheyney University and the 2nd Mr. Cheyney University.

The theme, Royalty: Past, Present and Future, took the audience back to 1300 BC, the era of King Tutankhamen, with a glittering Parade of Royalty. The stunning entourage in high couture preceded Rashaad J. Washington, handsome in a trim white suit and golden Eqyptian-style headdress, and the sari-wrapped Miss India Marie Cross, adorned from her bejeweled forehead to henna-painted hands and arms. The excited audience cheered as the organizational Kings, Queens, and Escorts proceeded through the theatre and onto the stage. Master and Mistress of Ceremonies, Thomas McRae, Jr. and Candace Cahoe, welcomed the audience from the podium. Uniquely Gifted Dance Group’s graceful performance and a blessing from Desmond R. King, Mr. Blue and White, set the evening’s tone.

As is the custom, Miss Cheyney University 2012-2013 Janelle Destiny McKelvey placed a sparkling golden crown on the head of India Cross, Miss Cheyney University 2013-2014, and Mr. Cheyney University 2012-2013 William T. Walker, Jr. positioned a golden crown on Rashaad Washington, Mr. Cheyney University 2013-2014.

Musical interludes were sprinkled throughout the ceremony, including an arrangement of Awesome God by student pianist Christian Beard and an a cappella rendition of Killing Me Softly, by Damsels in Black Dresses. Speeches followed, beginning with the University Charge offered by Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Phyllis Worthy Dawkins.

Wise beyond their years, the student leaders offered powerful messages for the audience. Rashaad reminded his peers to “Never forget the bridge that brought you over – Cheyney University” – and India urged the audience to “… make this year memorable. Find your own greatness. I have a feeling we need to take the future into our hands.” President of the Student Government Cooperative Association, Malik Williams, concluded the evening with his declaration, “I feel a change at Cheyney. I feel so proud. You can and you will. So many people tell you that you can’t. Today we celebrate campus leadership in its most elegant form. I wish you much success in all you do. We are all leaders in our own right. You ARE who you say you are.”
