Cheyney University Reflects on Passing of Two Great Icons

October 23, 2012

On Sunday, October 14, 2012,  Cheyney University lost two of its most stalwart supporters, former U.S. Senator Arlen Spector of Pennsylvania and Alumnae Hermione Hill Logan, daughter of the late Dr. Leslie Pinckney Hill, the first president of Cheyney Training School for Teachers (later, Cheyney University).  Both icons passed prior to the University’s 175th anniversary gala celebration on Thursday, October 18th.

“Cheyney University sends condolences to the family and friends of Senator Arlen Spector.   Senator Spector demonstrated his support of Cheyney University by helping the University to fund the Aquaculture program and to fund technology upgrades.  On his last visit to the University, Senator Spector enjoyed talking to students and seeing how the Aquaculture program has grown.  We will miss this ardent supporter and exemplary Pennsylvanian,” stated Cheyney University’s President, Dr. Michelle R. Howard-Vital.

Specter died of complications from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma at his home in Philadelphia, at the age of 82, and his funeral was held on Tuesday, October 16, 2012.  Specter was elected to the Senate in 1980 and represented Pennsylvania for 30 years, longer than anyone in the history of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Cheyney presented a proclamation to Senator Spector’s family at the funeral.

Logan received an honorary doctorate from Cheyney University on May 27, 2011 and passed at the age of 101.  She taught at Frederick Douglass Junior High School (Chester, PA) for 39 years.  She was raised on the campus of Cheyney University in Melrose Cottage, a registered National Historic Landmark, and graduated from West Chester High School (West Chester, PA) in 1929.  She earned a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Home Economics in 1933 from Cheyney and a Master’s degree in Home Economics from Columbia University in 1939.  Mrs. Logan was well-known as the wife of the Rev. Canon Thomas Wilson Stearly Logan, Sr., the eldest serving African American priest in the Episcopal Church, who passed earlier this year.

“The Cheyney University family and I express condolences to the Mrs. Logan’s family and friends on the passing of Hermione Hill Logan.  Mrs. Logan, and her late husband, Father Thomas W. S.  Logan, visited Cheyney University often.   Just recently the Logans made a significant scholarship gift to the University to help usher in future leaders.  We will miss Mrs. Logan dearly,” stated President Vital.

Funeral services for Mrs. Logan will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at Calvary St. Augustine Episcopal Church, 814 N. 41st Street, Philadelphia, PA, 19104.  In lieu of flowers, gifts in Mrs. Logan's name may be made to the St. Michael's Guild at Calvary St. Augustine Episcopal Church and to the Alumni Association of Cheyney University for Scholarships, Gregory Benjamin, Director of Alumni Affairs, P. O. Box 121, Cheyney, PA, 19319.
