Cheyney University Trustees Recognize VP For Finance and Administration

At the June 14 Council of Trustees meeting, Vice President for Finance and Administration and Chief Financial Officer, Gerald B. Coleman, was recognized for the contributions he made during his tenure at the University. Board Chairman Robert W. Bogle expressed the board's gratitude for the high level of service that Vice President Coleman demonstrated in his 3-year tenure at Cheyney Uniiversity. Mr. Coleman recently announced his plans to accept a position at another institution of higher education.
Coleman is a specialist in the field of higher education with a particular emphasis on financial stabilization and improvement. His expertise in higher education derives from having served as Vice President for Finance and Administration and Chief Financial Officer for several colleges, assisting them to stabilize their financial condition. Mr. Coleman is a turnaround specialist, helping institutions achieve positive operating results, sometimes even after years of deficits. Further, Mr. Coleman has helped colleges obtain capital financing to restructure their debt obligations and make capital improvements. Additionally, working with regional and national banks, Mr. Coleman has helped institutions obtain lines of credit to smooth out cash flow requirements. While offering expert coaching and counseling, Mr. Coleman has effectively managed financial departments, helping them to raise their standards and achieve greater operating efficiencies.
Prior to his higher education experience, Mr. Coleman served as District Finance Manager for one of Digital Equipment Corporation’s (now Hewlett-Packard) largest districts, again bringing his turnaround expertise to bear in moving the Southeast District from last place (among thirty districts) to first place in operating profits. Mr. Coleman’s background also includes serving as Group Controller with full profit and loss responsibility for Digital’s largest stand-alone division. Mr. Coleman began his financial career with Polaroid Corporation in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Mr. Coleman graduated from Lafayette College, Easton, Pennsylvania with a BA in Economics. He earned his MBA in Marketing from the University of Rochester in New York. Mr. Coleman also holds a Certificate in Management Development from Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia.
