Pennsylvania lawmakers in Harrisburg recently approved a 2.5% ($10.8 million) increase in funding for the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE). Under the 2016-17 fiscal year budget enacted this week, Cheyney University, PASSHE’s only predominantly African American college, will receive an 18.9% ($288,000) increase to its Keystone Honors Academy (KHA).

Jeffrey Bell can attest to the value of taking advantage of Cheyney University’s many student programs and activities, including the Career and Graduate School Fair which is held on campus every spring. The Business Administration major from Sicklersville, NJ, a Keystone Honors Academy scholar, attended the Fair last year and met wound up getting an internship that is paying off.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney recently unveiled designs for a 12-foot statue to honor one of the city’s most influential African-Americans. Octavius Catto was a Renaissance man, dubbed “the Martin Luther King Jr. of the 19th century.” He graduated as valedictorian in 1858 from the Institute for Colored Youth, which is known today as Cheyney University.

Cheyney University of Pennsylvania and Delaware County Community College (DCCC) officials have signed an agreement guaranteeing admission to Cheyney for qualified DCCC students who have earned an Associate in Arts, an Associate in Science, an Associate in Fine Arts, or an Associate in Applied Science degree.

Cheyney University of Pennsylvania has received a five-year TRIO Student Support Services grant totaling $1.1 million from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant will be used to provide programs and services that address retention, GPA and graduation rates among 140 low income first-generation students.

Besides carpooling with friends or catching the #119 and #120 SEPTA buses, they can grab (on a first-come basis) one of the two Zipcars parked in specially designated parking spaces at the Marcus Foster Student Center parking lot.

Cheyney University's Keystone Honors Academy and Bond Hill Program offer a free undergraduate and graduate education for qualifying PA students. Both programs have proven to be lifesavers for high-achieving students who, otherwise, could not afford to pay for higher education degrees. Some students earn both undergraduate and graduate degrees free of charge because the qualify for the scholarships.

The grass is looking greener at Cheyney University this summer as many lawns bordering campus classrooms and administrative buildings sport taller grass. Cheyney not only advances its greening initiative, but reduces its mowing cycle by half, saves natural resources and cuts carbon emissions by 50 percent.

Cheyney University of Pennsylvania was packed May 9 as family and friends gathered to watch the Class of 2015 walk across the stage to receive their long-awaited diplomas. The sweeping white tent on the historic quadrangle of the Nation’s 1st HBCU overflowed with well-wishers. As the University Band played Pomp and Circumstance, nearly 250 graduates processed behind Cheyney Administrators, Faculty, and Class of 1965 members who were on hand to celebrate their 50th anniversary.

Dawkins, III, President and CEO of Jo-Dan Enterprises, came to Cheyney University on November 13 to motivate and inspire the Keystone Honors Academy (KHA), a learning community of high achieving students. "Don't let failure define who you are. You're going to be challenged in life," Dawkins told the students. "Accept the challenge. Be professional. Prove yourself!"

Cheyney University Keystone Honors Academy (KHA) seniors Terrell Grayson, Travonya Kenly, John Cooper, Kristan Justice and Raven Smith-Parris are just back from Washington, DC where they participated in the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) Leadership Conference. The four day gathering provides leadership skills, as well as career and networking opportunities that often lead to internships and full-time positions to students from 47 publicly-supported HBCUs.
