Dawn Muchison Shocked by Cheyney Cake Award

Congratulations to Cheyney University Enrollment Services Representative Dawn Muchison who recently received The Cake Awared for going above and beyond when it comes to her work. Purchasing Agent and Co-worker Lynn Scott nominated her for the honor because "she is a dominant force at the front desk in the Financial Aid/Enrollment Management Office."

Cheyney's Yuhanna Muhammed Making a Mark in Hotel & Restaurant Management

Cheyney University senior Yuhanna Muhammed walked away from the 26th Annual National Society of Minorities in Hospitality (NSMH) Conference & Career Fair earlier this month with three paid summer internship offers and two full-time job offers upon graduation in December. The event was held on his birthday weekend earlier this month in his hometown of Pittsburgh, PA.

A 19-person delegation from the Cheyney University Hotel, Restaurant & Tourism Management (HRTM) Program is just back from the 26th Annual National Society of Minorities in Hospitality (NSMH) Conference & Career Fair. The big event was held at The Westin Convention Center in Pittsburgh, PA February 11 – 15. A number of them walked away with internship and job offers.

The First Annual Dr. Marcus Foster ('47) Memorial Lecture honoring Cheyney University's Rich History in educating educators, and the signature event of Cheyney’s Black History Month celebration, was a great success, honoring Cheyney’s rich history in education and one of its most distinguished education alumni, Dr. Marcus Foster. Foster’s daughter, The Rev. Dr. Marsha Foster Boyd, was the keynote speaker.

Cheyney Honors Academy Hosts Visit to Temple College of Medicine

Cheyney University students in the Keystone Honors Academy recently visited Temple University College of Medicine. The students participated in an information seminar which provided an overview of the requirements necessary for admission into medical school, and met with a senior admissions advisor who provided answers to their questions. In addition, they spoke with current students in the pharmacy, medical and dentistry schools, and toured the North Philadelphia campus.

Cheyney's HCASC Team Takes 2nd Place at Regionals & Qualifies for National Competition

Cheyney University’s Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC) team recently took 2nd place at the regional games at University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), which automatically puts them in the national competition that takes place March 21-25 in Torrance, California. “Our team did what they do best: stay calm and show us what they know,” exclaimed Coach Hazel Spears.

Pennsylvania Representative Thaddeus Kirkland will give the keynote address at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania's 178th Founder's Day on Wednesday, February 25 at 1 pm. The annual event will take place in the Marian Anderson Music Center Auditorium on the historic campus. Kirkland, a 1991 graduate of Cheyney, is a community activist who first burst into the public arena in the fight for improved education for students in the City of Chester.

Cheyney University held its Spring Convocation on January 29 under the theme “Building on the Excellence of Cheyney University.” Ushers gave each person attending a Cheyney Pride Pin with the school’s shield and a Cheyney Piggy Bank. Interim President Frank G. Pogue encouraged students, faculty, staff, alumni and guests to wear the pins daily and to fill their pig with loose change and turn it in to University Advancement Staff so that the money can be used to help Cheyney students.

The Cheyney University Women’s Basketball team recently went to the movies to see the film Selma. The 128 minute movie highlights the role of some of the nation’s most prominent African Americans in history such as Ralph Abernathy, Andrew Young, Coretta Scott King, Mahlaiah Jackson, Annie Lee Cooper, and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King (MLK), Jr. The film chronicle's MLK’s campaign to secure equal voting rights for African Americans via an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965.

One man's trash is another man's treasure. That saying definitely rings true for Zakariau Abdullahi, fondly called Zaks (pronounced Zack) by all who know him at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. That's where the 57-year-old has worked as a laborer for more than four years. Most recently, though, he's been spotted riding a blue bike all over campus, carrying his tools in buckets stored on the handlebars, and using a long grabbing gadget to pick up trash.

Pogue has announced that the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), the body that defines, maintains, and promotes educational excellence across institutions throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, has reaffirmed the University’s accreditation. In doing so, the MSCHE team closely examined the school and its programs, making sure that it lives up to its promises to students.

Randy Lewis visited campus November 10 to share his story about an initiative he undertook as Walgreens senior vice president of supply chain and logistics in 2007 when Walgreens opened its 14th distribution center in Anderson, S.C. The Center was the first facility of its kind to employ a significant number of people with disabilities. Lewis' inspiration, he said, came from his autistic son.

Dr. Frank G. Pogue, a proven leader with over 50 years of experience in higher education, is Cheyney University of Pennsylvania’s new Interim President. He took over November 3, allowing Dr. Phyllis Worthy Dawkins, who served as Acting President following the retirement in July of Dr. Michelle R. Howard-Vital, to concentrate on her Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs duties.

Randy Lewis, past vice president of Walgreens and author of "No Greatness without Goodness", will give a lecture at Cheyney University on Monday, November 10. Copies of his book will be on sale and he will be available to sing copies following the lecture. Proceeds from book sales will benefit the continuation of the Arts and Lectures Series at Cheyney University.

When Justin Watkins graduates from Cheyney University in May 2015 and turns his tassle from the right to the left side of his cap, he hopes to already have a paying job lined up. The senior Management major from Atlanta, GA came to Wednesday's Career Fair in Marcus Foster Student Union ready to show the nearly 40 employers there that he has the right stuff. "I've been in interviews before," he said. "This was a good job fair."
