Despite the 59-20 loss to Shippensburg, the Wolves put 20 points on the scoreboard, the second most of the season.
The Wolves rushing attack was led by Marcus Jones. The sophomore rushed eight time s for 90 yards including a touchdown run of 69 yards. The Cheyney quarterbacks of Chris Anderson and Malik Whitten combined for 13 of 20 for 115 yards and one interception.
Shippensburg scored on their first possessions to take a 21-0 as the first quarter came to its conclusion. The Wolves got on the board midway through the second quarter as running back Marcus Jones busted a run 69 yards straight up the middle. However, the Red Raiders countered with three scores of their own in the second quarter to take a 42-6 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Cheyney quickly posted their second score of the game early in the second half as the Wolves capitalized on a Red Raider turnover inside the red zone. Running back Mike Frenette fumbled on his own eight and Cory Brown pounced on it for the Wolves. On the next play, Cardoza Jacks scored for the Wolves cutting the lead to 42-13. However, Shippensburg would post two more touchdowns in the third quarter. Cheyney’s final touchdown of the game came on a Nahum Purdie rush off left tackle for 25 yards early in the fourth quarter. A Ship field goal late in the contest was the final score of the afternoon.
Shippensburg quarterback Zach Zulli had a career day for the Red Raiders. He was 25-36 for 384 yards and six touchdowns. His favorite target was Trevor Harman. Harman caught seven passes for 124 yards. Frenette rushed 11 times for 44 yards and two scores. He also caught five passes two of which went for touchdowns.
Things won’t get any easier for the Wolves as the host East Stroudsburg next Saturday. The ESU signal caller leads all of Division II.
