ELC Spring Series Showcases Entrepreneurial Innovation

The Cheyney University Spring 2013 Entrepreneurial Leadership Center Lecture Series offers an opportunity to learn from the experts how to develop a successful business. Aspects of Innovation will be offered in six programs at the in the New Residence Hall 1st Floor Conference Room at 6pm.  All programs are open to the public and are free of charge.  

“Innovation Overview” will be presented by Rich Bendis on Monday, February 4.  Mr. Bendis will give an overview of innovation and discuss trends in US bioscience, as well as the state of global innovation. He currently serves as the founding President and CEO of Innovation America (IA), a Global Innovation Intermediary focused on accelerating the growth of the entrepreneurial innovation economy in America.

On Tuesday, February 19, Jadelyn McGuiggan, director of Product Quality Specifications, Preproduction and Product Compliance at QVC, will discuss “Bringing Quality to Innovation.” Ms. McGuiggan will talk about quality assurance measures and quality development practices for products in compliance with regulatory standards. Her responsibilities assure that products meet QVC's quality performance standards along with passing all regulatory requirements.

“Social Media Marketing” is the topic on Wednesday, March 6. Presenter Melody Franklin will share the benefits of social media marketing and discuss things to avoid when using this new innovative marketing strategy for your business. Ms. Franklin is the CEO of The Execution Group which specializes in areas of creating brand awareness through digital strategies and social engagement.

Entrepreneur, inventor and professional designer, Robert Haleluk, will discuss “Finding Innovative Solutions” at the Thursday, March 14 program. Mr. Haleluk will review the process of turning an idea into a prototype, licensing the product to a company and receiving the “Big Check.” Mr. Haleluk has launched several successful businesses, holds numerous patents and has a passion for bringing great products to the marketplace.

"Cheyney Entrepreneur Alums" who have chosen the career path of entrepreneurship and excelled at their craft will return to campus on Tuesday, April 2. These entrepreneurs have taken the same journey you are presently on and achieved success. They will share some tips and insights.

On Tuesday, April 9, Kevin Lewis will talk about the innovative way of funding startups known as "Crowd Funding." Mr. Lewis is the CEO and Founder of Lewis Education Group (LEG). LEG is a training and consulting company focusing on entrepreneurship, small business, and educational technology.

The Spring 2013 series concludes with the 4th Annual Entrepreneurial Business Plan Competetion at 5 pm on Wednesday, April 24.  Special guest, Warren Brown will be the keynote speaker, "From the Courtroom to the Kitchen.” Mr. Brown will share his story of leaving a career as litigator for the federal government to start his bakery, CakeLove, in 2002. The inspirational entrepreneur has been recognized for his entrepreneurial spirit by a number of local and national media outlets including the Oprah Winfrey Show and the Today Show.

From 2005 to 2007 Brown was the host of Food Network TV show Sugar Rush. He enjoys sharing the joys of baking and has authored three cookbooks to encourage others to bake from scratch: CakeLove in the Morning (2012) which celebrates weekend brunch, United Cakes of America (2010) featuring recipes from every state in the Union, and CakeLove - how to bake cakes from scratch (2008).
