CHEYNEY, PA (June 15, 2010) — On Saturday, June 12th, members of the Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church, located in Philadelphia, presented a deserving college-bound student, Akilah Evans, with the “Luberta Teagle Enon/Cheyney Scholarship.” In addition, Harvard Law Professor, Charles Ogletree, delivered the keynote address for this inaugural presentation.
The Luberta Teagle Enon/Cheyney Scholarship is the result of the generosity of Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church members who are alumni and friends of Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. The scholarship represents the beginning of many activities and programs which Enon members, who are committed to Cheyney University, will develop. The University’s administration reports being grateful to Rev. Dr. Alyn E. Waller for his enthusiastic support, which enabled members of the congregation to come together for this cause.
The scholarship is named after Luberta Teagle, who was president of the Cheyney University Class of 1953 from 1994-2000 and served as secretary of the Cheyney University National Alumni Association from 1995-97. In 1997, she and her husband received the Cheyney University President’s Recognition Award from the National Alumni Association. Ms. Teagle was so committed to the university that, among other things, she arranged for Pastor Waller and other ministers to perform fundraisers to benefit Cheyney University. Pastor Waller even enrolled in some Cheyney University courses when he came to Philadelphia.
Luberta Teagle and her husband met at CU while Leslie Pinckney Hill was President, and Ms. Teagle sang in the Cheyney choir under the direction of Dr. Hill. She was a beloved teacher, and contributors to the Luberta Teagle Enon/Cheyney Scholarship included persons she had taught third grade.
