Exelon Celebrates Black History Month with Cheyney University Concert Choir and Staff

03/09/10

Exelon Corporation is committed to diversity awareness and this was the focus of their “Lunch and Learn” programs held throughout Black History Month.

Exelon invited Cheyney University’s Concert Choir to kick-off their month of activities and ended it with a presentation by University Archivist Mr. Keith Bingham and Executive Associate to the President Mr. Eric Almonte, J.D.

The choir, under the direction of Professor Damon Dandridge, performed several selections for the Exelon employees before enjoying a complimentary soul food luncheon.

The Exelon employees of Kennett Square kindly reached into their own pockets to support the concert choir by contributing $4,000.  The check was presented to Dr. Michelle R. Howard-Vital and is intended to be used for choir scholarships.

President Howard-Vital said, "We were very pleased and honored that the Exelon employees awarded a $4,000 contribution to the Cheyney University choir to help defray the cost of their performance. We look forward to being good neighbors with our friends at Exelon. Together we can build the next generation of scientists-- one student at a time."

Professor Dandridge said, “ It's with extreme gratitude I accept The Exelon Corporation's  generous scholarship award of $4,000 for The Cheyney University Concert Choir. This award will make a very big difference for the group's immediate future.”

Later that month, a historical perspective on CU was presented to a small group during the “Lunch and Learn” series via Power Point.

Presenter Mr. Bingham said, “We were honored to present the many vintage photographs and historical facts that are vital to Black History. ”

Co-presenter Mr. Almonte said, “The University is thankful for both the invitation to showcase the talents of our students as well as the financial support to continue to  offer more scholarships for our students.”

The historical presentation will be made available to everyone via the University’s website at www.cheyney.edu.
