Cheyney's FMM Entrepreneurship Expo Attracts Record Crowd
May 3, 2014
Kamia Jackson won first place with the retail concept, “Black Book New York”
Cheyney University's Fashion Merchandising and Mangement (FMM) Program set a new attendance record when it hosted its 4th Biennial FMM Fashion Entrepreneurship Expo on May 1. FMM students worked hard to offer an exciting and highly interactive event.
The purpose of the Expo was for FMM majors to showcase their original retail store concepts. Those who attended got to cast their vote for the best concept and this year's vote tally was incredibly close.
"When I saw the final count of votes separating the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners by one point, I knew how well the FMM majors had done on their retail store concepts," said Dr. Vanessa Brantley, FMM Program Coordinator.
FMM entrepreneurs Shakia Canty (Cataliya), Kamia Jackson (Black Book New York), Samuel Prather (Renee), Cori Ray (Jetsetter), and Janae Silver (2080) rose to the occasion with help from their fellow FMM majors and CU students Somanie Blyden, Brianna Clark, Nahum Purdie, Janae Silver, Asiah Walker and Jill Worrell.
When all votes were in, the “Public’s Choice” Winners were:
- 1st Place-Kamia Jackson with the retail concept, “Black Book New York”
- 2nd Place-Janae Silver with the retail concept, “2080”
- 3rd Place-Cori Ray with the retail concept, “Jetsetter”
The “Judges’ Choice” Winners were:
- 1st Place- Kamia Jackson with the retail concept, “Black Book New York”
- 2nd Place-Samuel Prather with the retail concept, “Renee”
- 3rd Place-Shakia Canty with the retail concept, “Cataliya”
Official judging was conducted by Burlington Stores (Kenya Bullock and Donna Norton), PNC Bank (Don McKellar and Jack Wolf) and Sam’s Club (Joan Dhurieux, Val Daniels, and John Monaghan,). Monetary and gift awards were presented by these companies along with the corporate headquarters of Macy’s. Others on the official judging panel were Dimitra Minter (photographer), Jamina Whitehead (hair and fashion stylist) and FMM alums: Shaun Guess, Vincent King, and Shayne Weatherspoon. FMM Alums attending the event included Ebony Burton, Shaun Guess, Te’Ana Knowles, Kristen Miller and Kiasha Thornton, who drove seven hours from North Carolina.
In addition, Dr. Brantley presented special gifts to her VIP guests. Wawa gift cards were won by Reginald Whiteside, Dr. Hazel Spears, and Ebony Burton.
Dr. Brantley and the underclassmen FMM majors are already thinking about their next big event--the 4th Biennial FMM Fashion Show in December 2014.
