Families And Students Welcomed By Alumni Family
Mentoring/Support Team During Student Orientation 2010
July 16, 2010
The Family Mentoring/Support Work Group of Concerned Alumni of Cheyney University proudly announces the near completion of our initial activity.
Nineteen fantastically, gracious alumni volunteered to speak to parents and students over the nine days of Student Orientation from June 22 - July 22, 2010. Alumni presenters provided an introduction to the Family Support / Mentoring initiative, an overview of their experience as students at the University, (though much has changed since many of the presenters attended) and the rich and marvelous history that has enlivened this institution for one hundred and sixty-three years. We pledged Alumni availability and support to those parents who were interested or felt the need for such a partnership to insure the success of their incoming students as they join our Cheyney University family.
A resource sheet created by team member Jackie Johnson was distributed. It was absolutely exhilarating to see the faces of parents brighten and to experience their enthusiastic energy of pride and great expectations as they joined alumni to sign contact cards. To date, at least one hundred and twenty-five parents /families from across the country have expressed an interest in the future efforts of this program by completing contact cards.
Gratitude and deep appreciation are extended to the Alumni who thought it not robbery to give of their very precious time to bring hope and encouragement to parents, family members and students entering our Beloved University at this time. They are: Sandra P. Smith, James E. Washington, Emma Dickerson, Marion Haliburton, Karen E. Shanks, Barbara Daniel Cox, Cheryl A. Dyson, Gwynne Hoye, Henry Harper, Marilyn G. Clark, Junious R. and Sonjia Stanton, Robert Hunter, Kenneth Hamilton, Gaynelle Turner- Lewis, David Adams, Edythe B. Ford-Bush, Dessie D. Burgess, and Carolyn L. Whitaker.
Appreciation is extended to university staff who were instrumental in making our efforts possible: Gregory Benjamin, Director of Alumni Relations; Sharon D. Thorn, MSA,Director, Student Activities; Michael Taylor, Interim Director of Enrollment Management; Vickie Edwards Redmond, Assistant Director of Admissions & Alumni Liaison for Admissions and Dr. Suzanne Phillips, Vice - President of Student Affairs/Student Life. The Family Mentoring / Support Team looks forward to the continued and shared energy and relationship of everyone to insure paths of least resistance and open doors to excellence in educational, personal, intellectual and social development for all students enrolled at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania.
