Fleming Leads Wolves in Season Finale

In the season finale the Wolves fell 43-3 to the California (PA) Vulcans. Freshman Isaiah Fleming led all players with 10 tackles.
The Wolves and the Vulcans battled through an even first quarter with Cal coming out on top 7-3. A Tyler Wilkinson 32 yard field goal capped off a 10 play 65 yard drive for the Wolves only points of the afternoon.
“I’m proud of the way our guys battled all year long,” stated Coach Ken Lockard. “They bought into a system that we think will work. We got close a few times this season. A play here and a play there end we were looking at a 4-7 mark. The staff and I have always been happy with the effort that the guys having been putting forth week in and week out.”
Things started to unravel for the Wolves in the second quarter. Cheyney gave up a safety early in the period when punting from its own end zone the punter stepped on the end-line. Cal they found the end-zone on each of their next two possessions extending the lead to 22-3. A defensive touchdown for the Vulcans near the end of the quarter gave the Vulcans a 29-3 advantage at intermission. Cal would tack on two more touchdowns to start the third quarter for the final margin of victory.
Cheyney struggled to stop the Vulcans passing attack. Cal quarterback Peter Lalich was 15-22 for 252 yards and five touchdowns. The Cheyney passing attack featured four different receivers with three receptions apiece; Khalif Dandy (3-38), Darnell Burton (3-37), Dominic Crowell (3-31) and Marcus Jones (3-7). Anderson was 14-25 for 117 yards. However Cheyney turned the ball over a season high six times and was whistled for 13 penalties. Cheyney was able to force three turnovers but could not capitalize.
Jones also led the rushing attack gaining 35 yards on eight carries.
Cheyney ended the season 1-10 while Cal sits at 9-2 and must await the NCAA football committee decision to see if they will be selected to compete in the Division II Championships which start next week.
