Student Activities Director Sharon Thorn Honored During Women's History Month

Cheyney University Director of Student Activities Sharon Thorn was honored in the Ada Georges Dining Hall as part of Thompson Hospitality’s annual observance of Women in History Month. “We wanted to honor someone who definitely makes an impact on student life at Cheyney University, someone with tenure, someone who the students lean towards. We polled students during lunch and dinner hours and her name kept coming up,” explained a Thompson representative.

Dr. Adedoyin Adeyiga Receives Cheyney Cake Award

Cheyney University Chemistry Professor Dr. Adedoyin Adeyiga got a great big surprise when he recently walked into a conference room in the New Science Building on campus for a staff meeting. He quickly knew something was up when he saw two of his students who took an online chemistry class with him over the winter break, sitting around the conference table with his colleagues and members of the President's Executive Council.

Cheyney's Honda Team Wins $25,000 Grant in National Competition After Placing 2nd in Country

Cheyney University's Honda Campus All-Star Challenge team is bringing home a $25,000 grant after placing second in the national competition in Torrance, CA. In 11 years of competing in the fast-paced brain games that pit the best of 48 HBCUs against each other, this is the first time that Cheyney has advanced to the playoffs.

Former Cheyney Football Players Go Pro

Former Cheyney football standout Jamil Williams made his professional football debut this past Friday for the ASI Panthers as they traveled to Saginaw, MI to take on the Sting. Williams fresh off his All-PSAC senior season received the starting nod at cornerback for the ASI Panthers professional indoor football team. Three other former wolves are also chasing their dreams in the pros with Williams.

Despite the snow, over 60 students showed up on Saturday, March 21, ready to soak up knowledge at Cheyney University's 2nd Annual Student Activities Leadership Conference. "Our students need to have all of the tools and resources available to them in order to evolve into the best possible leaders here at Cheyney and beyond," said LaMott Moore, a Director of Student Activities at CU. "We look forward to expanding the conference next year and eventually opening the conference up to other schools."

Cheyney Sophomore Samih Taylor Presents Colonization Research in Granada, Spain

Hosted by the University's Center for Career & Professional Development and Internship Coordinator Lisa Blount, the event attracted 25 employers looking for workers and interns.

The 2015 Cheyney Hospitality Entrepreneurship Seminar (CHES)--An Intimate Luncheon Panel Discussion--was a success. The upscale luncheon and mini business plan competition drew about 40 people March 4th at 12:30pm in The Cheyney Grille on the 2nd floor of the Harris-Turner Building. Student entrepreneur winners took home $50 to $200 in winnings for their unique ideas and business plans.

Congressman James Clyburn (D-6th, South Carolina) will kick off Cheyney University's Presidential Lecture Series by speaking at the historic institution on Wednesday, April 1 at 1 pm in Marian Anderson Auditotium. A reception and book signing will follow the lecture. “We are excited to have Congressman Clyburn as the inaugural lecturer,” said said Interim President Frank Pogue, Ph. D. “The Presidential Lecture Series will feature lectures from outstanding and well-known individuals."

“A Legacy of Leadership” was the theme for Cheyney University’s 2015 Founder’s Day, a time to celebrate the 178th birthday of the nation’s 1st HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities).PA Representative Thaddeus Kirkland (’91) held nothing back while giving the keynote address. “Over the years, there have been many attempts to destroy, defame, degrade and shut down my beloved institution," he said. "But we are like the rising of the phoenix who was able to stand the tests of time."

Cheyney University senior Yuhanna Muhammed walked away from the 26th Annual National Society of Minorities in Hospitality (NSMH) Conference & Career Fair earlier this month with three paid summer internship offers and two full-time job offers upon graduation in December. The event was held on his birthday weekend earlier this month in his hometown of Pittsburgh, PA.

Cheyney University students in the Keystone Honors Academy recently visited Temple University College of Medicine. The students participated in an information seminar which provided an overview of the requirements necessary for admission into medical school, and met with a senior admissions advisor who provided answers to their questions. In addition, they spoke with current students in the pharmacy, medical and dentistry schools, and toured the North Philadelphia campus.

Elisabeth Burton, Cheyney University's Manager of Housing Operations & Auxiliary Services (Dining) since 2012, got a big surprise when she recently reported to the first floor of Burleigh Hall to give a report to the President's Executive Council (PEC) about a housing issue. That's when Interim President Frank G. Pogue and the PEC presented her with The Cake Award for going above and beyond her regular duties and responsibilities.
