Founder's Week Activities Mark 175 Years of Cheyney History

Cheyney University of Pennsylvania will celebrate  175 years of rich African American history at its Founders Day celebrations the week of February 21.  Founded in 1837 as the Institute for Colored Youth, Cheyney University serves as the oldest African American institution of higher learning in the United States.  Recognizing its past and the students that make it’s future, Cheyney is hosting a series of events during “Founder’s Week – Celebrating the Legacy.”

Programs include

-  Wednesday, Feb. 22  "Bayard Rustin (1912-1987) Non-Violent Warrior for Justice," a lecture by Yale University Professor Dr. Margaret Chisholm, Esq, at 1 pm in Carnegie Hall.

- Wednesday, Feb. 22 Founder's Week Concert,  "A Tribute to Black Composers Featuring the Cheyney University Concert Choir" at 7 pm in Marian Anderson Music Center. The concert will feature music by Black composers from the early twentieth century to the present. 

- Friday, Feb. 24,  tours of the historic campus led by Cheyney University student ambassadors at 9,10, and 11 am.

- Friday, Feb. 24,  Cheyney Inn Anniversary Brunch from 9 to 11 am. Reservations requested.

- Friday, Feb. 24, Founder’s Day Convocation at Dudley Hall  at 1 pm.  The Keynote Speaker is Cheyney University alumnus (Cheyney University ’96) and Trustee, Robert Traynham, the newly appointed Political Analyst with NBC, primarily serving the MSNBC network and former host of the national edition of The Comcast Network “Newsmakers.” Traynham is the host and moderator of Roll Call with Robert Traynham, a dynamic Sunday political talk show.
