Four Cheyney University Student-Athletes Attend 24th Annual National Society of Minorities in Hospitality Conference

Four Cheyney University student-athletes joined 14 other classmates and three faculty members, represented CU at the 24th Annual National Society of Minorities in Hospitality Conference that took place in Orlando, FL Feburary 21-24.

Four Cheyney University of Pennsylvania student-athletes were among 14 other HRTM  (Hotel, Restaurant & Tourism Management) students and three faculty members representing CU at the 24th Annual National Society of Minorities in Hospitality Conference. The conference was held from February 21-24 at Walt Disney World Hilton in Orlando, Florida. The athletic participants included Christina Jordan (women’s basketball),Tyresse Oden (men’s basketball), Adrese Hicks (football) and Mychal Evans (football). Accompanying them were  Cheyney University faculty members Krystal Peters, Herbert Black and Dr. Ivan Turnipseed, CU HRTM Program Coordinator. 
 
The event featured panel-led workshops to prepare students to succeed in the world of hospitality.     Advice on topics ranged from interviewing skills, different careers in hospitality, and secrets to success in a highly competitive industry. CU students also met and interviewed with industry sponsors one-on-one at NSMH networking suites and  attended a career fair.
 
Aside from the professional development aspect of the conference, Cheyney HRTM students took advantage of social development opportunities by mingling with more than 1,000 students, staff, faculty and industry professionals from more than 100 hospitality schools and companies from around the country. 
 
"It is our goal that our students come away with interviews, internships and are prepared for the next step in their career,” commented Turnipseed,  "From the opening session to the ending awards gala, Cheyney HRTM students were afforded the opportunity to advance as young professionals in the hospitality industry while simultaneously building and maintaining relationships and friendships that last a lifetime."
