The Dayton Contemporary Dance Company will perform at Cheyney University Wednesday February 22, 2017 at 7:00 pm in the Marian Anderson Music Center. The event is open to the public. Tickets are available via Ticketleap.

Dayton Contemporary Dance Company (DCDC), an internationally acclaimed modern dance ensemble, will perform Wednesday February 22, 2017 as part of Cheyney University’s Arts & Lectures series. In its tour of the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), DCDC will present thought-provoking, energetic, and engaging new dance work by living choreographers of color at Cheyney, the country’s first HBCU. The 7 pm program, “Young, Gifted and Black: A Transformative Experience” is open to the public. Tickets are $25 and are available via Ticketleap. Cheyney University students, faculty and staff get in free with ID.

Known for holding the world’s largest repertoire of classic works by African-American choreographers, the audience can expect to see some of the greatest talent in modern dance among artists of color both established and up and coming. Founded in 1968, DCDC is committed to reaching the broadest audience through exceptional performance and arts-integrated education. As a result, the dancers will hold an interactive workshop for students on Wednesday, February 22nd. This is the Company’s second performance at Cheyney University. They first brought their show to campus in November 2015 and held a very memorable interactive workshop for students.

“Our Young, Gifted and Black: A Transformative Experience tour presents dance art of the highest quality,”states Debbie Blunden-Diggs, DCDC artistic director. “These dances tell a story, which is the crux of our art. I want the students of Historically Black Colleges and Universities to partake in these stories, which their own experience will add to and enrich as they witness our dancers, perform on stage. Our dance is high art while remaining accessible and relatable to our audiences. We want to reach all audiences as diversity is a central value of Dayton Contemporary Dance Company.”

“The Dayton Contemporary Dance Company puts on an exquisite show,” shares Sharon Cannon, Coordinator of the Cheyney University Arts & Lectures Series.” We are excited to welcome Dayton Contemporary Dance Company back for their second performance at the Cheyney University. Their artistic presentation is flawless and physically, they are amazingly strong dancers. The academic engagement with Cheyney University students the day after the show was a joy to watch. They enthusiastically shared their craft with the students and taught them an entire routine. The University is honored to have the opportunity to host DCDC again. We hope that the community will join us for the performance and we guarantee that no one will be disappointed.”

“Young, Gifted and Black: A Transformative Experience” has been made possible by the generous support of Virginia B. Tolumin Foundation and National Endowment for the Arts.
