What CU Students Need to Know

August 15, 2013

Dear Students,

Welcome to Cheyney University!

If you are a new student or returning student, we have great expectations for you. We expect that you will acquire a deep yearning for lifelong learning. Your matriculation into Cheyney University is just one of the many steps you will need to take to become competitive, knowledgeable, flexible, and compassionate world citizens.

The faculty at Cheyney University is very interested in your intellectual and social development, and they will challenge you to expand your perspectives and improve your communications skills. Also, the faculty expects for you to prepare with readings and questions before attending classes, so that you can learn from each other and add to the learning experience for all.

It is my expectation that you will take advantage of every opportunity to learn as much as possible and to develop personally and socially. There is an outstanding Arts and Lectures Series and an Entrepreneurial Center to help you become more exposed, prepared and confident.

By the time you reach your junior year, we expect for you to begin making a transition into the competitive work world by participating in an internship experience and by working with the staff in career services. During this time, it is also important to begin to develop your brand and to improve further your written and communications skills—remember you will be expected to be a contributing member of teams.

As many of you know, when you enter the competitive and global working environment, you will be expected to continue to learn in your profession, to employ technology to solve problems, and to work collaboratively in teams. We want you to learn how to work in teams while at Cheyney University; thus, we encourage you to become engaged with one of the many learning communities, fraternities or sororities, band, choir, academic clubs, and/or other collegial organizations such as the 100 Black Men Collegiate Chapter.

Again, welcome to Cheyney University. We want to get to know you, support you, and help you develop into the conscientious and courageous leaders needed for the 21st century.

Sincerely,

Michelle Howard-Vital, Ph.D.

President

 Dear Cheyney University Students,

You are about to embark on a new academic year full of potential and possibilities.  Those of you who are athletes begin practicing one week from today, returning students start moving into the residence halls on August 19th, and classes commence for all of you just a week later.  This is a busy time and we, at Cheyney University, look forward to your arrival and to your success!

A quality education from Cheyney University should be a transforming experience for you.  I want you to know that our faculty and staff are here to help you and to create a positive and rigorous academic culture.   In addition, the Academic Success Center will offer you tutoring and computer access, The Writing Center will help you become an effective communicator, and University College will help freshmen and transfer students adjust to life at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania.

This year, incoming freshmen will have a selection of more than a dozen Living-Learning Communities which will be spread throughout campus residence halls. Within these discipline-based communities, students will find common interests among their peers, as well as support and feedback from like-minded residence advisors, peer mentors and faculty advisors.  The goal is to structure positive and supporting cohort teams for those of you who live on campus.

We’ve also made some organizational changes this year to help you and your families navigate the registration and financial aid processes quickly and more conveniently.  Thus, the offices of Enrollment Management and Financial Aid are now centrally located in the Wade Wilson Administration Building, along with the Bursar and Registrar offices.  This provides efficient one-stop-shopping customer service for you and assures that you can complete the registration and financial aid processes quickly and efficiently.

Some other changes include, for your convenience, expanded dining services at Ada Georges Dining Hall and the Marcus Foster Snack Bar.   I am also excited to report that, after several years of preservation work and remodeling, Humphreys Hall will be occupied this fall with Humphreys Scholars and, from time-to-time, visiting scholars.

Please know that in order to help enrich your academic experience, the University offers a wealth of opportunities for student engagement, including the Arts and Lectures series, the Entrepreneurial Learning Center lecture series, dozens of student organizations, and 12 intercollegiate sports teams.  So, keep your eyes open for opportunities to get involved on campus.

The new academic year is in your hands.  By your daily actions, you will shape your future.  Make it a bright one!

 Sincerely,

Michelle Howard-Vital, Ph. D.

President

This year, Cheyney University will have 13 Living Learning Communities (LLC) in all residence halls.   LLC at Cheyney University are groups of students who have similar academic majors or interests and often take one or more of the same courses.  All new students (freshmen and transfers) are required to actively participate in learning communities in order to live in the New Residence Hall.   The LLC include:

•    Business
•    Communication Arts
•    Education
•    Hotel Restaurant Tourism Management
•    Red Cross Public Service and Volunteerism (all majors welcome)
•    Social and Behavioral Sciences
•    Science Technology Engineering Mathematics
•    Spanish Culture and Language
•    Transfer Students
•    Undeclared Majors
•    Phenomenal Women: Zora Neale Hurston (for women only)

•    Students Eagerly Exploring Knowledge (University College must assign you to this)

*You can find a description of each LLC at https://www.facebook.com/cheyney.livinglearning
To sign up, please contact Tiffany Alexander, M.S., Coordinator of Student Engagement-Learning Communities at talexander@cheyney.edu or call 610-399-2440.

A helpful student resource is the Academic Success Center (ASC).  Located on the 2nd floor of Vaux Logan, it offers services such as tutoring and computer access to assist students in becoming efficient and effective learners through a student-friendly environment.  Students can participate in individual and group academic support programming, such as tutorials and workshops, which can be accessed on-line.  You can also use the ASC computer lab for  internet and word-processing work. The ASC is a spacious and quiet environment to study – you are encouraged to use it.

Remember, for your convenience, the Wade Wilson Building is a one-stop shop for all of your processing needs. The Registrar and Bursar Offices are on the 1st floor. The Registrar and Bursars Offices are on the first floor. The Admissions and Financial Aid Offices are on the second floor.

So, plan ahead, complete all necessary paperwork, take care of all outstanding finances and do whatever else you need to do to ensure that you are cleared for classes which start August 26th.

Enjoy the rest of your summer and be safe.

Heartfelt Greetings To Our New Cheyney University Students & Welcome Back To Our Returning Students!

July 26, 2013

I hope each of you have enjoyed a pleasant and prolific summer and are enthusiastic about the start of classes.

Whether you are a returning student or just beginning your college career, you will find that the Cheyney University of Pennsylvania faculty, staff and administrators will work with you to develop a culture of success by: building a community of learners; constructing an environment that promotes leadership; creating a strong sense of Cheyney pride; and fostering learning in and out of the classroom.

Over the summer, the university has been working extremely hard to institute changes to improve all student services.  The reorganizational changes for the Division of Student Affairs and Student Life focus on providing students with improved services that are more efficient, effective, and expeditious.

Some of the changes include:

Enrollment Management Services – The Offices of Admissions and Financial Aid have combined into a unified Office of Enrollment Management Services. Enrollment Management Specialists will process both admissions and financial aid information. To create a seamless approach to enrollment, the newly created office of Enrollment Management Services has relocated to the 2nd floor of Wade Wilson Building.

For Financial Aid Verification, please note -- If you have been selected for verification by the federal government, do not wait until you return to school to complete the process. Avoid long lines by contacting the School Service Center immediately! Doing so will alleviate unnecessary delays in processing your aid.

Participation in the verification process is not optional if your FAFSA form is identified for verification. If you do not submit the requested documentation, you will not be eligible to receive federal or institutional need-based financial aid, and your parents will not be eligible to borrow a federal PLUS loan.

Housing and Residence Life/University College – The Manager of Housing Operations will oversee all residence hall operations. Four Coordinators of Student Engagement in University College will assist in promoting student development in the residence halls. Additionally, they will foster living learning community activities in all residence halls.    Security will be provided seven days per week for extended hours in all residence halls. Two Coordinators of Student Engagement and Learning Communities will work Tuesday through Saturday evening hours. 40 student resident hall assistants will continue to assist students with enjoying successful residential life experiences.

Student Activities – An additional Director of Student Activities will join the Student Affairs staff also working Tuesday through Saturday evening hours. This position will focus on student development in the residence halls, in conjunction with the evening Coordinators of Student Engagement and Learning Communities.
