Community Need (description)
The Cheyney University Keystone Honors Academy and the Honda Campus All Star Challenge Club (CU-HCASC Club) initiated a food drive to help address the problem of hunger in our community. According to the local food pantry, the Chester County Food Bank, more than 70,000 people and 40,000 households in the county lack adequate food. The Chester County Food Bank is a non-profit organization that collects, grows, processes, stores and distributes food to those who serve the hungry in Chester County, Pennsylvania. The demand for food has increased by 42% in the last two years. -
Location (on campus, in the community, etc.)
Collections were taken on campus, and in the community. Promotional materials were distributed across campus, and the honors began collecting items on campus in September. A collection site was located near the Keystone Honors Academy office, and students regularly made donations throughout the semester. Additionally, students actively recruited students, faculty and staff to donate. Volunteers also distributed brochures and educational information about the problem of hunger in our community. Donations were collected by the Chester County Food Bank on November 23, 2010. -
School Participation
More than 100 people participated in the food drive. All of the members of the CU-HCASC Club participated, students in the honors program were active participants, and students from across campus helped to promote the program and many others gave.

Cost of Project
There was no cost associated with this project. All supplies were donated by the University offices, and volunteers did all of the foot work. -
People Impacted & Benefits (# of people impacted)
Several large boxes of food items were collected to donate to the Chester County Food Bank. The Chester County Food Bank serves more than 70,000 people a year. This donation helped address the Food Bank’s ability to address the problem of hunger in our community. Because they were driven to volunteer and donate, more than 100 additional people were affected by the project. Because this drive was conducted in public spaces, and additional educational material was provided, at least another 1500 gained valuable information about the hunger problem in our community.
